Hammer Protection Device (Help)

Dear;

I am new in using water hammer software. and i have a project which consist of 900 mm transmission line with pump station. I modeled the project for pump shut down due to power failure and i viewed the results for upsurge and downsurge reults which is beyond the working pressure for the pipe , the upsurge near the pump is 31.9 bars and the working pressure for the pipe is 16 bars. so hammer protection device is required, i need help to know which device is required and at which place on the pipeline i should put it. i attached the project file for your review.

  • Sayed,

    The answer would this would be highly dependent on your budget for the project and after that would be a question of which protection equipment you determine to do the job for you. One of the great features of HAMMER and our other software is that you can take advantage of using scenarios so you can test multiple protection devices and determine, which offers the best protection for your system for the best price.

    Since you are new to the sofware if you haven't done so already you should probably go through the quick start lessons in the help documentation. You might also want to have a look at our HAMMER V8i wiki technotes on this page:

  • I would also recommend chapter 13 of our Advanced Water Distribution Modeling and Management book, which covers protection devices. As Mark said, there are many considerations, factors and criteria when it comes to protective device selection, Sometimes it's a combination of strategies, or perhaps even modification of existing equipment such as resizing an air valve or putting a flywheel on the pump. It's really up to the engineer to decide this, using HAMMER as a tool to analyze the affect of different surge mitigation strategies.
