ModelBuilder Importing 2007 .DXF File - Corruption Error

Software: WaterGEMS V8i (Ss3), v. 08.11.03.19

OS/Hardware: Windows 7, Service Pack 1 (64-bit); Intel Core2 Duo CPU, E8500 @ 3.16GHz; 6 GB RAM

I have an alignment for a pipe network that I am trying to import to WaterGEMS from AutoCAD. I have saved the AutoCAD alignment (made of polylines) in a 2007 .dxf format. The saved .dxf file is 660 KB in size.

In WaterGEMS, I am selecting the ModelBuilder.  I create a new model by clicking the "New" icon, then select "CAD Files" as the data source type in the window that pops up. I browse to my 2007.dxf AutoCAD file with the alignment, and when I select the file I am greeted with this error:

The AutoCAD file was created by myself, and is not in a read/write protected area that I do not have access to. I have tried closing the AutoCAD file so AutoCAD isn't using the file when WaterGEMS tries to import it. I have tried restarting my computer/software. No dice! I searched through the wiki but didn't find my error in the context of the ModelBuilder.

Any tips greatly appreciated!

  • Hi Michelle,

Unfortunately, this is a generic error message, but there a few things you can try to resolve the issue that I can think of off the top of my head.

    1) Close the software. Locate the icon on the WaterGEMS desktop and right click on it then select properties. Click on the Compatibility tab and select the check box for "Run this program as an administrator". Now open the program and try using modelbuilder again.

While you are in this location it might help us to know if your WaterGEMS software is running as 32 bit or 64 bit. All you have to do in order to let us know is go to the shortcut tab and copy and paste the target location in your reply post.

    2) Make sure you have the latest patch set for this version of WaterGEMS, which can be download via the instructions found here.

Also, it might help to know if you have Microstation installed on this machine? If so, what version do you have? The version number can be found by going to HELP > About Microstation inside your program. I recall their being an issue with the RealDWG 2012 or 2013 for this version of WaterGEMS, which is why I ask.

  • Here are a few more ideas:

Check if any other DXF files have the same problem. For a quick check, try the Example2.dxf file included in the "Samples" folder within your WaterGEMS installation folder.

If the problem is specific to this DXF, try saving it down to an earlier DXF format. Check for any problem with the linework (I believe there are some commands to check and clean things up). Consider sending us the file to check:

  • Thanks for the tip Jesse -

Example2.dxf did open just fine. Saving to an earlier DXF format did not solve the problem HOWEVER, I did get it to work like this:

APPARENTLY "Export to .DXF" and "Save to .DXF" are two different things in AutoCAD. I was exporting. The files look the same, behave the same, and are of the same size when comparing an exported file vs. a saved file. I tried a plain old Save As -> 2007 DXF, and it works fine (as in, imports to WaterGEMS) now. Beats me as to why that is, but hopefully it can help someone else out in the future!

  • Hi Michelle,

I'm glad to hear that you got it working.

Would you be able to send us the file to review? We may be able to find out what the problem is with the original drawing, or possibly identify a need for an improvement to a future version of WaterGEMS.

If comfortable, you can either attach the files to this post (use the advanced reply editor) or use the secure file upload location, only accessible by Bentley. Instructions are below. Please include the original DWG as well as the errant exported DXF.

    Thanks!
