WaterGEMS Glitch on Profile Creation Attempt

Software: WaterGEMS V8i SELECTseries 4, 08.11.04.57 64-bit. The latest (12/9/13) patches have NOT been installed, but I've put a request in to IT to get 'em!

Hardware: 3.16GHz processor, 6GB RAM, 64-bit OS running Windows 7 Enterprise

Issue: Crashing upon profile creation!

I've got a pretty large water distribution system (1000 pipes) set up. When I validate the network, I get no errors.

When I attempt to create a profile using the "New" button in the Profiles taskbar, WaterGEMS glitches. I get as far as the "Profile Setup" box, but when I click "Select from Drawing", I get this lovely box:

If I close this error box, WaterGEMS remains open. To be clear: WaterGEMS doesn't actually crash at this point, but all of my options get "fuzzed out":

Clicking junctions in my network does not produce any results. In fact, all clicking seems to do nothing. I did notice the "use right-click, Done to complete your operation" notification at the bottom of the screen, however when I right click, "Done" does not appear as an option:

I can only get my menus useable (not fuzzed-out) again by selecting "create profile" from this right click menu. I can then select a start and finish node, and a new "Profile 2" is created. My original attempt to create "Profile 1" is empty.

While selecting the profile in this round-about way does seem to be a workaround, the profile path I am selecting is pretty complex. WaterGEMS' new shortest-path profile creation isn't going to work for me, and I need to be able to select the nodes/profile path manually. Any ideas on what's causing the glitch? Any help greatly appreciated!

This glitch aside, the new WaterGEMS has been nothing but raves for me. The new database format seems to make an already-powerful tool a thousand times more powerful. I haven't experienced any crashes with large data imports, which was always an issue for me in the past! Love the new changes. Big thanks to the Bentley crew that made it happen.

  • Hey Milynno,

Does this seem to happen only opening a Profile on this specific model or any model?

Try creating a new model and see if the Profile problem persists.

Also, it may also be necessary to take a look at the model files.

There are two options for sharing your model files on BE Communities. If you would like other members to be able to access the files, you can upload them as an attachment using the ‘Advanced Reply editor’ before posting. If your data is confidential, you can follow the instructions in the link below to send it to us via Bentley Sharefile. Files uploaded to Sharefile can only be viewed by Bentley colleagues.

  • Hi Dan -

I made a separate, simple model and had no trouble creating a profile. I opened up an old, large file and had no trouble creating a profile there, either. Granted, both models, file size aside, are much simpler than the one I am dealing with now. The one I have now has a substantial number of loops.

I have uploaded my file to the Sharefile. I got a confirmation that the upload was successful, but don't seem to have a link to share. Please let me know if you have questions about the upload.

  • Hey Milynnno,

I will need the .WTG and the .SQLITE database file in order to open the file. I can see the .WTG but not the .SQLITE.

  • Hey Michelle Reynolds,

After taking a look at the model I noticed that this is currently a known issue. There is a problem with Spot Elevations and Profile creation. There is currently a workaround for the issue. You will need to delete all of the Spot Elevations. This will eliminate the Profile problem. To do this simply try the following:

1.) Go to View > Flextables.

2.) Click on the Spot Elevation Flextable.

3.) Click on the Select in Drawing button.

4.) Delete all of the Spot Elevations.

You will notice that this will solve the Profile issue. This problem will be resolved in the next version of the software.
