Insert image background in existing WaterCAD model

Hi everyone...

I am working on model with exact geographical coordinates. I want no to load a background aerial image that I have in AutoCAD. How can I place image to be on exact coordinates that are in AutoCAD?

I used to do it in Epanet by creating an bmp image from AutoCAD with exact dimensions provided as coordinates from Epanet. But in WaterCAD I can only implement it with "pixels" and I have no idea hot to put it to be in exact position and in exact scale like in AutoCAD.

Thank you for answers...

P.S. is it possible to load Google Earth maps in WaterCAD, WaterGEMS?

  • Igor,

I opened up Example 7 (from \Program Files (x86)\Bentley\WaterGEMS\Samples\) as it has an aerial background on it. Looking at the values and the coordinates, it feels like you just need to enter the original coordinate.

Now, the image bottom left is at 0, 0 so I can't be 100% sure that just the original coordinate will work, you may have to offset/scale the coordinates.

Not in standalone, however opening the model in other platform like MicroStation, you might be able to.

    UPDATE
If you have license to open model inside AutoCAD then you can open the model in AutoCAD and use AutoCAD feature to add supporting information.

  • I concur with Akshaya's comments about taking advantage of WaterCAD's interoperability. If the options available for background layers in the Standalone platform do not suffice, use native MicroStation support in the WaterCAD for MicroStation platform or native AutoCAD support in the WaterCAD for AutoCAD platform.

  • I have stand alone version only. I am really not managing to put image in exact coordinates with exact scale. Let me mention it one more time, in Epanet I can see the drawing dimension in real coordinates, which I then use to generate exact size background image which is automatically scaled and placed to correct position inside Epanet. I want to do at least same thing in WaterGEMS...

  • Hi Igor,

WaterCAD StandAlone does provide you with the control you need.  If you know the real coordinates of where the image should appear, simply enter those X,Y coordinates in (for Bottom Left, Bottom Right, Top Left, Top Right).

Note: The "real coordinates" are displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the WaterCAD window as you move your mouse cursor around the drawing area.

    Best Regards,

    Rob.

  • To expand on what Rob said, here's a video showing how I would import a Google Earth image into WaterGEMS. (You'll need to watch this in full screen mode in order to see it clearly)
