I'm very interested in WaterGEMS' embedded genetic algorithm for pump scheduling.
I couldn't find the mathematical model of the pump scheduling problem in the manual. Is it available somewhere (a full mathematical model for a pump scheduling problem for a system with pumps, valves, reservoirs, etc)?
Would such a mathematical programming model be available in this book: www.bentley.com/.../AWDM.htm ?
I'm interested in seeing the performance of mathematical optimization tools (i.e., branch-and-cut) with that of the genetic algorithm, but I can't find the full mathematical representation of the problem.
Any help is appreciated.
The Advanced Water Distribution Modeling and Management book that you mentioned has a chapter on optimization and some information about genetic algorithms. There are also some journal papers on the subject of optimized pump scheduling. However the full "mathematical model" of the genetic algorithm used in Bentley WaterGEMS isn't something that these resources delve into.
Could you tell us a bit more about what you need this for? Is this for a real system that you're using a commercial license to model? Is this an academic exercise?

I'm a professor in operations research (Laval University, Quebec, Canada), and I'm going to teach an applied OR course for graduate students. Since most of them will come from the engineering faculty, I'd like to make WDS an application we see in the course. So, my interests are purely academic.
I collaborate with some people from Polytechnique Montréal who use WaterGEMS, and that's how I got to know about your GA, but I could not find the mathematical model used in many papers. Some of them are really restricted, I'm looking for a complete one with elevations, pumps, valves, reservoirs, etc.
