Problem

Is there a way to globally edit the pattern format (continuous vs. stepwise) in the Patterns manager?

Problem ID#: 70971

Solution

There is no way to globally edit the pattern type, but there is a workaround that you can use to do this quickly using Modelbuilder and Excel.

  • First, create a worksheet with the first three cells in the top row containing Key, Label and Pattern Format as shown below. You will be exporting the pattern label and format (continuous or stepwise) to this worksheet.

  • Open Modelbuilder and click the New icon. Choose "Excel 2013 (12.0)" as the Date Source type and browse to the attached Excel spreadsheet.
  • Then click Next. Click Next through the next three screens.

  • On the Specify Field Mappings screen. click the ">" symbol next to the table type and choose "Components," then "Pattern."

  • For the Key Field, choose "Key". In the bottom portion, you will need to map the other fields.
  • For Label, choose "Label" from the pull-down. For Pattern Format, choose "Pattern Format (Label)".

  • Then click Next. In the next screen, for "Would you like to build a model now?", select No. Then click Finish.

  • This will return you to Modelbuilder dialog. Highlight "Book 1" in the list and select the "Sync Out" icon.

  • This will update the Excel spreadsheet with your pattern information. Keep the Modelbuilder dialog open.
  • Go back to the spreadsheet. You should see your current pattern information in the spreadsheet now. Change the Stepwise patterns to Continuous (or vice versa).
  • If all of the patterns will be one or the other, you would simply need to type that into the first column under the Pattern Format header and use Excel's "Fill Down" command (Control+D).

  • Once this is done, go back to the Modelbuilder dialog. Make sure that "Book1" is still highlighted and click the Build Model icon/Sync-In to Model icon.

  • This will update the patterns in your model and make them all Continuous. Close Modelbuilder and open the Pattern manager to verify this.
