ArcMap Error "Enumerated value field types not available for color coding"

  Product(s): WaterGEMS, SewerGEMS
  Version(s): 08.11.XX.XX, 10.XX.XX.XX
  Area: General

Problem

When trying to use the "Layer Symbology" tool in the ArcMap platform to color code on an enumerated field (dropdown list), the following error occurs: "Enumerated value field types not available for color coding"

Problem ID#: 57079

Solution

This is a limitation with ArcMap because the enumerated fields are not supported by ArcMap's symbology based on "quantities". To color code your enumerated field, please use these steps:

1) Make sure the enumerated field is added to the geotable for that element type

2) Right click on the name of the element type (such as "Pipe") in the Table of Contents and choose "Properties".

3) Click the Symbology tab and click Categories on the left side

4) Choose your field from the "value field" dropdown then select "add all values" to populate the list

5) Adjust the colors/styles as necessary

6) Click Apply > OK
