Constraint based design with different and same conduit materials and shapes

Product(s): SewerCAD, StormCAD, SewerGEMS, CivilStorm
Version(s): 08.11.02.XX+
Area: Libraries/Catalogs

Problem

When running constraint based design, the program only picks pipes with one particular material and does not pick higher diameter pipes that may have a different material.

Constraint based design not picking other shapes or materials besides the initial ones.

Applies to: Design mode with the GVF Rational (StormCAD) or GVF Convex (SewerCAD) numerical solvers.

Problem ID#: 60859

Solution

Currently, the constraint based design routine only designs the sizes and assumes the shape and material that was initially set in the conduit. This is due in part because it is unlikely that you would not already know the shape and material of your pipe. Shape and material can be adjusted after constraint based design.

If you have different materials for different size pipes of the same shape, you'll need to choose the same material for all your catalog conduits (the one used as the initial pipe material), run constraint based design, then change the material field appropriately based on the designed diameter.

Different catalog class for different groups of pipes with same shape and material

Also if you want to assign different group of diameters/sizes to different groups of pipes (same shape and material), then there is a workaround for that.

Ideally software can use the diameters from different catalogs as well besides the one that is assigned as per the requirement. Meaning even if you have assigned catalog 1 to pipe group 1 , sizes from catalog 2 also will be used in design for group 1.

However if you want to assign catalog 1 to pipe group 1 and catalog 2 to group 2 with same material an size. Then as a workaround you need to give different label to the materials in catalogs, e.g. concrete 1 , concrete 2 so software will stick to assigned catalog class to pick up the sizes.

These multiple material labels with same characteristics can be added to engineering library of materials and saved. This workaround is explained in detail in this wiki.

For creating pipe groups, you could use selections sets, in that case you can have multiple selection sets for multiple pipe groups and then assign separate conduit catalog classes to these groups manually or use the global edit function. Filtering the flextable can help with this..
