Error installing connection client - Setup Failed, 0x80131902 - Unspecified Error

Problem

When attempting to install one of the above products, the installation hangs or the below error is seen due to a failure in the installation of the CONNECTION Client.

Setup Failed, 0x80131902 - Unspecified Error

This issue may be seen when there are multiple instances of Microsoft .NET installed on the machine.

Solution

Please try following to resolve this issue

  • First ensure that there are not any other installations in progress, such as a separate CONNECTION Client installation.
  • Run the program as administrator, right click on the setup>Run as administrator. 
  • Perform Clean reinstallation of product , which removes left over folders from the previous installation. 
  • Try installing CONNECTION Client first separately. You can download it from the Software Downloads section of the CONNECTION Center. After installation of connection client try installing WaterGEMS again.
  • Install Microsoft .NET 4.6.1, which is required for installation as of WaterGEMS version 10.01.01.04. Note that the CONNECTION Client itself requires a certain version of .NET Framework such as 4.6.2 - see this article.
  • For one case, the issue was resolved by uninstalling Microsoft .NET 3.5, then connection client could be installed with no errors. Later Microsoft .NET 3.5 can be installed again which is required for other products as well.
