Problem

How can I set the initial water level of a river or channel, using channels in SewerGEMS or CivilStorm?

Background

You can use a channel section for simulation of a river in SewerGEMS or CivilStorm. However, it may be necessary to determine the initial level of the river for modeling purpose.

Solution

  • To specify a base flow from the normal river flow, you could add an inflow (Inflow wet collection) into the upstream cross section node and then compute the model.
  • After computing the model, you may need to advance forward in time using Time browser (Analysis > Times) a bit to see the channel fill up and reach a steady state, which can be seen in profiles.
  • If the river level is constant because of a tailwater condition downstream, then you could "set" the water level by way of the User Defined tailwater option in a downstream outfall element.
