Windows Error : This app can't run on your PC

Product(s): WaterGEMS, WaterCAD, HAMMER, SewerGEMS, CivilStorm, StormCAD, SewerCAD
Area: Installation

When installing or downloading an OpenFlows product, the following message appears;

“This app can’t run on your PC. To find a version for your PC check with the software publisher.”

To resolve this issue see the options below;

Note: These options have operations which can change your system settings. It is advisable to consult with your organization’s IT team before proceeding with these changes.

Option 1: Install the product with the correct bitness (32-bit / 64-bit)

This message can appear if the incorrect product is installed with regards to the operating system. For example if you have a Windows OS of 32-bit but downloaded and are trying to install a program which is 64-bit then this error can occur.

When downloading the product you can check the “architecture” of the product and download accordingly. x86 would mean it’s a 32-bit version of the product and x64 means it’s a 64-bit version. Note that CulvertMaster, FlowMaster and PondPack are 32-bit only while the other OpenFlows products will deploy both a 32-bit and 64-bit version during installation (32-bit if you are using a 32-bit operating system and both 32-bit and 64-bit if you are using a 64-bit operating system).

Option 2: Use an administrator user profile

If working on a “guest” user profile or if the error appears in your current windows profile you can create a new windows user profile (with administrative privileges) or use an existing administrator user profile.

In addition to this it would also help if you have administrative (read / write) privileges to your install folders. Typically OpenFlows products are installed in the C Drive.

Option 3: Disable “SmartScreen”

SmartScreen is an inbuilt Windows app which protects you from phishing and malware attacks. However, sometimes it is known to prevent OpenFlows products from installing. Temporarily disabling it can allow you to install our products. See the following steps below to disable it.

1. Search “SmartScreen” in the Windows search bar and click on “App & browser control”

2. Click the “Off” option under “Check apps and files”

When changing this option you might be prompted to grant administrative access. Click “Yes” to confirm the operation. Having disabled this now try installing the program. If the error does not appear then this option works. If you still get the error message, choose the “Warn” option instead of “Off”.

Option 4: Enable sideloading of applications

Note: This option changes your Windows settings to enable applications from external sources to be installed. This is generally a setting which is controlled by your IT team hence it is advisable to consult before proceeding.

1. Go to “Settings” or type in Settings in the Windows search bar.

2. Go to “Update & Security” settings;

3. In here go to the option “For developers” towards the bottom and select “Sideload apps”. You might receive a prompt stating the changes due to this operation. Click “Yes” to continue
