Sharing engineering libraries using ProjectWise

Product(s): OpenFlows: SewerGEMS, WaterCAD, SewerCAD, StormCAD, WaterGEMS, CivilStorm, PondPack,
Civil: OpenRoads Designer, OpenSite Designer OpenRail Designer
Version(s): CONNECT Edition, V8i
Area: Layout and Data Input

Problem

  1. How can I reuse storm/rainfall data (storm events), conduit / inlet catalogs in subsequent projects?
  2. Can I store engineering libraries, catalogs in ProjectWise folder or access it from existing ProjectWise folder data?

Solution

OpenFlows products like WaterGEMS, SewerGEMS or Civil products like OpenRoads Designer, OpenSite Designer , or OpenRail Designer have ability to connect to ProjectWise to store or access model catalog data in engineering libraries. This article is applicable both to the OpenFlows products and the Civil products (the Drainage and Utilities part). It will cover how to create storm data, catalogs and engineering libraries in ProjectWise and accessing existing libraries from ProjectWise for multiple projects.

Note: if you do not have access to ProjectWise, you can either use Seed Files or place Engineering Library XML files on a network location to share catalog information. See: Sharing Engineering Library data with multiple users

When you have access to ProjectWise Explorer, and you have integrated the OpenFlows/Civil product with ProjectWise then you can store data in ProjectWise or access data from ProjectWise. ProjectWise integration must be configured first:

Creating storm data and storing it in ProjectWise.

This example uses storm data but the same process can be applied to other Engineering Library types.

First, if you have not done so already you will need to create a new storm data .xml file in ProjectWise to save your standard data at one place. Once the engineering library XML file is stored in ProjectWIse you can add standard catalog data to it.

Click on Components > Storm Data > Engineering Libraries > Import from Library > New > Create Library > Select Advanced Wizard (this is a ProjectWise dialog) > Select Target folder and Save the .xml file, which will be then visible in the engineering libraries section of Storm Data.

Once this .xml is created in the PW, you can create new storm data and export it to the .xml file in ProjectWise or add/export existing storm data to the .xml file, which can be used for your any future projects by your team members.

Exporting new / existing data to PW

Either create new storm data based on rainfall data available with you or export/attach existing storm data to the .xml file in ProjectWise which you can utilize later or use as standard by importing it from PW for your future projects.

For this select storm data or create new storm data > Export to engineering libraries > Select the PW .xml file created above to attach the data to it.

Importing existing engineering libraries from ProjectWise / Accessing data from ProjectWise

If you have already saved catalogs or storm data or any other engineering libraries in ProjectWise, then you can import this existing .xml file and utilize the data for your project within your team making it as standard templates.

Go to components > Catalogs > Conduit catalogs > Engineering Libraries> Import from library> New > Add existing library> Select the folder and document to be imported i.e. .xml file > Click open.
