What is the workflow for using ProjectWise with MicroStation for the OpenFlows products? (WaterCAD, WaterGEMS, HAMMER, SewerCAD, SewerGEMS, StormCAD, CivilStorm, PondPack)

Background

The below workflow uses Bentley StormCAD as an example.  For other products (such as WaterCAD), replace "StormCAD" with the appropriate product name.

Steps to Accomplish

Option 1: To start a new StormCAD project from an existing base map drawing:

  1. The first thing you need to do is copy the base map drawing (.dgn) to ProjectWise.
  2. Open StormCAD for MicroStation
  3. Log into ProjectWise (see this article for enabling ProjectWise integration)
  4. Open an existing base map (.dgn) from within ProjectWise
  5. In the StormCAD toolbar, choose Project > Attach New - save it in ProjectWise
  6. You can now lay out your StormCAD network and analyze.  When the model is saved, the associated StormCAD project will be saved along with the .dgn.
  7. When you need to re-open this project, simply open the .dgn from the initial Open-From-ProjectWise menu (after opening StormCAD for MicroStation).

Note:  It may be desirable to save a blank StormCAD project along with your base map in ProjectWise to use as a template.  For future projects, you would simply open the base map .dgn and it would already contain a new StormCAD project (so you will be ready to lay out your stormwater network).

Option 2: To add an existing StormCAD project stored on your local hard drive:

If this is a Standalone StormCAD model:

  1. First you will need to start with a new DGN file or existing base map drawing. This can be done by either a drag/drop of the DGN into ProjectWise (using ProjectWise Explorer) or by starting a new DGN locally (cancel the open ProjectWise dialog and click the New button in the MicroStation Manager) and saving to ProjectWise (note: Captive Environment will need to be turned off in order for this to work, else you will only be able to save-as locally when the file is first opened locally)
  2. Open MicroStation and open the DGN file from step 1 from ProjectWise (see this article for enabling ProjectWise integration)
  3. In the StormCAD toolbar, choose Project > Attach existing
  4. Cancel the ProjectWise open dialog and you should see the local file open dialog, where you can select the StormCAD model from your local hard drive. NOTE: if you do not get the local file open dialog when cancelling the ProjectWise open dialog, you are likely using Captive Environment. In this case, you will need to disable it (ProjectWise Explorer > Tools > Options > Settings > Document > uncheck "Use Captive Environment"). If disabling captive environment is not an option, you will need to first associate the DGN and the StormCAD model on the local drive (start a new DGN on the local hard drive, attach the StormCAD model and save it locally), copy the DGN to ProjectWise, open it from ProjectWise, then you get a prompt about locating the StormCAD model, which allows you to select from the local drive.
  5. Once the StormCAD project is attached, In the StormCAD toolbar, choose Project > Save Attached As and save the model in ProjectWise
  6. When you need to re-open this project, simply open the .dgn from the initial Open-From-ProjectWise menu (after opening StormCAD for MicroStation).

If this is a StormCAD for MicroStation project:

  1. Copy the base map drawing (.dgn) to ProjectWise.
  2. Open StormCAD for MicroStation
  3. Log into the ProjectWise open screen and open the DGN from step 1 (see this article for enabling ProjectWise integration)
  4. When prompted to locate the StormCAD model, select it from it's location on your local hard drive
  5. In the StormCAD toolbar, choose Project > Save Attached As - Log in to ProjectWise and save
  6. When you need to re-open this project, simply open the .dgn from the initial Open-From-ProjectWise menu (after opening StormCAD for MicroStation).

Option 3: To open an existing StormCAD project that is already stored in ProjectWise:

If this is a Standalone StormCAD model:

  1. First you will need to start with a new DGN file or existing base map drawing. This can be done by either a drag/drop of the DGN into ProjectWise (using ProjectWise Explorer) or by starting a new DGN locally (cancel the open ProjectWise dialog and click the New button in the MicroStation Manager) and saving to ProjectWise (note: Captive Environment will need to be turned off in order for this to work, else you will only be able to save-as locally when the file is first opened locally)
  2. Open StormCAD for MicroStation
  3. Log into ProjectWise and open the DGN from step 1 (see this article for enabling ProjectWise integration)
  4. In the StormCAD toolbar, choose Project > Attach existing and select the StormCAD model from ProjectWise
  5. Save the project. When you need to re-open this project, simply open the .dgn from the initial Open-From-ProjectWise menu (after opening StormCAD for MicroStation).

If this is a StormCAD for MicroStation project:

  1. Open StormCAD for MicroStation
  2. Log into ProjectWise (see this article for enabling ProjectWise integration)
  3. From the ProjectWise Open window, select the .dgn associated with the StormCAD project
  4. It should automatically open both the .dgn and the related StormCAD project files.
