Mstn Connect Update 1 DWG SaveAs increases the files size by a factor of 4!

Hi,

This dwg file seems like it should be very small, but it is 8 MB.  I opened it with Mstn Connect Update 1, did a SaveAs command and the result was a 30MB file!  Why would saving a file increase it's size by a factor of 4?

  • Hi Reggie,
I was able to reproduce both your output and my output. The difference was what version of DWG you're exporting to. If you export to the 2016 DWG format, then you get a slightly larger file. If you export to the 2000 DWG format, the size greatly increases.

  • I have tried saving your file as R2000 in AutoCAD2016 and reproduced the file size explosion. The cause to the problem seems due to a large number of orphaned linetypes in your DWG file. These linetypes were originally imported into AutoCAD and later bound(i.e. merged) into this DWG file. ACAD's purge utility can remove these orphaned linetypes. My guess is that when saving the file to an older version AutoCAD/RealDWG attempts either to add more data to these linetypes for the purpose of round trip, or to drop the line types to segments such that an older version of ACAD can display them. Either of these can increase data size. Good finding, Robert!
