    No more ContextCapture Editor?!?

    Scott Ernst
Offline Scott Ernst 2 months ago

I was just reading the iTwin Modeler Wiki and ran across this sentence. "the complementary module ContextCapture Editor coming with a ContextCapture license or subscription is now deprecated and will not be included with an iTwin Capture Modeler license." What does that mean? I have a permanent license for ContextCapture. ContextCapture Editor is the CAD software that I use to digest my reality models. Are we going to loose CCE? Is CCE no longer going to be supported in the future? If not what will be the equivalent? As far as I can tell Microstation doesn't have the same capabilities as CCE for cutting sections or dealing with reality models.

Dear Scott, ContextCapture will be deprecated this year and will reach End of General availability before the end of the year. ContextCapture Editor will continue to work for existing users but won…

The goal of this initiative is to continue to serve our users with qualitative products in dedicating development efforts on the  key mission of the iTwin Capture team which is creating the digital context from reality data.

I understand that the deprecation of CCEditor impacts consumption workfows of generated outputs. However, depending on the nature of  Reality data created with iTwin Capture Modeler and its destination,  (Civil, Surveying, Construction, Buildings…) Bentley Portfolio's offer a large choice of dedicated products  bringing much more value for the user than CC Editor can.

I understand the concern of still being offered of  a cost effective solution on a price sensitive market and we are working on alternatives:

      •  our new iTwin Capture practitionner subscriptions grant access to the Capture capabilities, including cloud processing, at a much more competitive price on the market
      •  The iTwin Capture Suite with iTWin Capture Manage and Extract offers amazing feature extraction capabilities
      •  The actual sales campaign with a discount on a bundle of the Reality Modeling worksuite and Descartes Virtuoso Subscription still gives an option that covers 100% of CC Editor capabilities.

What we are missing in CC Editor ar Descartes is Survey module. Contextcapture had advantage over other SfM software that it was more oriented to professionals and surveyors that you could get acurate models and also add custom coordinate systems producing models either in local or global coordinates and later finished in CC Editor(ground extraction). iTwin Capture Suite or combination of iTwin Modeler+Descartes+OpenSite is just not cost effective solution for less than city level modelling. Publishing 3D models and just  doing comments or simple measures is too basic for real building workflows. I feel that it is step back not forward. Heck Bentley even no longer has any online examples of 3D models as it was with Acute3D viewer. Gone. All we get now is this flat page and one video - https://www.bentley.com/software/itwin-capture/

Hi Oto, can you please be more precise on which functionality of CC Editor you're missing in Descartes?

As described here Descartes includes all functionalities of CC Editor.

Got it, there are some options. But as Descartes are missing Survey module this is not complete solution.

So we can expect capture price to be adjusted down to be more affordable and accounting lack of CCE?
