Activation problem

Which software are you working with? V8i, Connect, Prosteel, etc. - and what version are you using?

Hopefully someone from Bentley will be along shortly, but the answer to those questions will surely help them.

If the license is part of a pool owned and managed by the college, then you will need to be connected to the college license pool to have a license. I'm not sure if that is what is going on here, but it's definitely true. If the college owns the license pool, you will need to be connected to them to use one of their licenses.

At one point I worked with a laptop that had MicroStation loaded onto it to be used with the office license pool, I could take the laptop anywhere, but I only had a license when I was connected to the office network.

Licenses are not usually stored on the computer itself. The computer will have an license ID code to identify itself to the license management software, but the computer does not store the license. The management software stores the licenses. The computer cannot access/activate a license until it is connected to the license management software, and that license goes away when the computer is removed from the license management software.
