Hi,
We have a service account running nightly scheduled tasks in Microstation. The jobs run on a dedicated server using Windows Task Scheduler.
Until now we have simply activated Microstation using the activation key.
However, now when we have to sign in to the Connection Client, how do we activate Microstation for the service account?
Do we need to make a separate Connection user for the service account or can we still use some sort of activation key?
Thanks.
Best Regards,
Jens
Hello Jens,
You need to first register user(s) into User Management and ask them to sign-in into CONNECTION client. Once they are signed-in they need to activate Microstation through Bentley Licensing Tool. Here is the activation instructions.

Hello Abhishek,
I have the same issue with service accounts and filed a service request, SR 7000918399, in may last year. The advice Bentley gave me at that time is to check out a license for the service account. Not the best solution I think, but workable.
Furthermore, Bentley recognized this problem and did let me know that:
“We're working on a server mode for machines like yours that use applications to run processes like rendering, batch processes, etc. It's not available as of yet, but will be in the future”
Can you inform us on the status of the ‘server mode’ in CONNECTION Client.
Regards,
Andre
I have been testing for the past 2 weeks. A simple job but it successfully runs every night.
The only thing I have done is to login to the Connection Client on the server. But I am not sure this will keep running especially if I am running af more complex job that runs for hours.
However I noticed in the Bentley Communities wiki that you can use a server access key for deployed server products (much like the SELECT server activation key). And that you can generate it from the CONNECT center. But I am not how to apply it in Microstation.
How to manage Access Keys for Deployed Server products
I found this description of using server mode which is applicable for ProjectWise however I have tested it for Microstation and it seems to work.
https://communities.bentley.com/products/projectwise/content_publishing/w/wiki/48707/projectwise-interplot-server-products-registration-and-ses-activation
But I would prefer someone from Bentley could confirm or deny that this is how to use server mode in Connection Client.
@AndrevR do you have any update on your service request?
That’s quite a hassle to get your license!
I recently solved it by installing the 10.00.19.31 version of CONNECTION Client on the server, together with MicroStation update 14. I then logged in with the service account, signed-in in CC and checked the ‘Automatically sign me in’ option and logged out. The service now runs all the time.
Whether this is luck or this is meant to be, I do not know, but it works for me.
The service request was closed shortly after I filed it and the advice to export a license was given. That was all. Whether or not Bentley solved the license issue for a service account, I do not know. I never received a notification as a result of my SR.
Kind regards,Andre
Thanks for the quick reply.
A more simple approach. I think I will try it out as well.
Have you created a dedicated Bentley user for the service account? Or do you just use your own user.
Best Regards
Hi Jens,
It's sure worth a try. I hope it works for you.
I have a dedicated account which is enabled to run services and this account is a Bentley account as well to be able to sign-in to CC.
