License Download?

I asked our Bentley representative about arranging a quarterly rental for a new application (which we have trialled through a service ticket) and his response (the relevant part of it) was this:

"Once you are signed to OA you then simply download the license from our server and install as usual, no need to issue a PO, you will be billed at the end of each calendar quarter, based on you final usage, thus it is critical that you do not open more licenses than you require, please note usage is calculated on a per hour basis ( ie if you open and close the application twice between 2-3pm or 2-4pm, etc this will register as 2 usages)."

Can anyone tell me what "download the license from our server" means?

I have never noticed, not can I now find anywhere to download a license from.

Does he mean just download the software, use it and then pay at the end of the quarter? That doesn't work! We already downloaded the software and although it wouldn't license (restricted mode only) it recorded usage against 3 suites simultaneously - needless to say we are already in dispute over that invoice.

  • Hi,

I didn't see a mention of the specific product but you should be able to activate it by going to the License Management Tool within the application. For example, in MicroStation, it is under the Utilities drop-down menu. This is where you can activate and/or check-out a license.

    Thanks,

    Glenn

  • Based on your response above, your company is utilizing the SELECT Open Access (SOA) program which gives access to a large portfolio of Bentley product licenses. I suspect your account manager meant to say that in lieu of a lease, you simply obtain an installer from our website (i.e. the Software Fulfillment Center) and start using the product. Your main site activation key already provides access to the licenses. However, your site administrator may be restricting access to a subset of available licenses using a custom activation group. To determine whether your computer is using one, please perform the following steps:

    1. Open the License Management Tool.
    2. Select Options from the Tools menu.
    3. Examine the site activation key.

If the site activation key begins with VS, then your computer is using a custom activation group. In that case, you would want to ask your site administrator for access to a particular license.

  • We already downloaded and installed the software back in June but were unable to activate it and had a service ticket for that which resulted in Bentley providing a separate key for a 30 day trial which has now expired (I think because they could not fix the activation issue).

When I contacted our representative to arrange a quarterly license for the software he told me the information I quoted above, which you have at least confirmed is partly nonsense.

I am the site administrator and I have previously tried to configure and activate a license using the main site and using a custom activation group. Part of the problem seems to be that the product (Moses) is not listed in the license file for our site on hosted selectserver so I cannot explicitly grant permission to use it.

I tried to set up a separate CAG with no checkout restrictions but there is a problem with the setup of CAGs in selectserver in that it seems impossible to configure them with different restrictions, they simply mimic the main site restrictions.

Even when no restrictions are set in the main site it is not possible to activate the software.

The only way I can create a different set of restrictions is to use a temporary activation key, however Moses is still not on the list of applications and once again allowing all still does not allow it to activate.

Further the software is supposed to split into 3 suites Basic, Advanced and Enterprise - If we open the software even to attempt to activate it and fail, it is recorded as an overuse against all 3 suites. We only require, and can only afford to license, the basic suite at this time.

I cannot therefore make any more attempts to activate this software based on such a vague procedure and I am forced to consider alternative software from another supplier.

  • Hi JimW, we are looking into why the license for the Moses software is not listed on your site activation key.

  • Hi JimW, the MOSES licenses (MOSES, MOSES Advanced, and MOSES Enterprise) are now included in your license. I am sorry for the previous inconvenience. I can also look into the behavior you are reporting regarding the CAGs.
