Licensing made simpleSELECTserver provides organizations with an ability to maximize license utilization and minimize the burden of administration through the use of pooled and trust licensing. Pooled licensing is often the top reason organizations deploy SELECTserver, but there are many other great benefits to be gained. Learn how you can streamline license management and administration, turn application usage reporting into an invaluable business tool, and more.

SELECTserver reports provide visibility into an organization's use of Bentley applications. Managers can generate customized reports which provide valuable business intelligence to aid in planning, budgeting, project billing, and job estimating. A key benefit is that managers can determine how much time was spent on the structural detailing on a particular project.
Custom reports can be generated to provide insight into which applications have been used, who used them and what the peak pooled usage was for a day or any other predefined period. The new Inventory by Machine report provides a listing of Bentley products and versions that are being used on your machines. All reports, once generated, can be exported to an Adobe PDF file, Microsoft Excel Workbook, Microsoft Word or CSV format.
Custom Activation Groups were designed specifically to allow the site administrator to align their license pools to the needs and demands of their company. Custom Activation Groups leverages the SELECTserver reporting tools and displays recorded usage data in Custom Activation Groups Reports. Expanding on the functionality of Temporary Site Activation keys, Custom Activation Groups add reporting to an administrator-defined sub-grouping of a license pool; thus enabling an administrator to track usage based on the deployment demands of their organization. Since Custom Activation Groups are created against a site identified by Bentley, usage is appropriately rolled up to that parent site, but reporting remains separate.
Bentley mandates your licenses are to be distributed geographically, by site. This distribution however, may not coincide with the needs of your company. Accordingly, the Custom Activation Groups technology was created to enable a site administrator to subdivide a license pool. Subdividing licenses into smaller pools, allows for departmental, project, and other license management schemas to best fit your company's licensing needs. Since Custom Activation Groups are managed locally by the administrator, they always remain current even in an ever-changing environment. The usage collected from Custom Activation Groups is prepared for review in Custom Activation Groups Reports.

SELECTserver introduces multi-site license management from a single licensing server. Centralized software and license administration eliminates the need to run a SELECTserver at each site.
SELECTserver tracks application usage for each managed site. Licenses are obtained from a pool and usage is reported to the server. A single interface provides managers with insight into usage patterns, which reduces the need to operate redundant SELECTservers, as only one server is required to manage all sites.
Organizations may choose to outsource license management. SELECTserver may be hosted and operated in Bentley's state-of-the-art data center or deployed on an organization's own servers.
A Bentley-hosted server offers all the benefits of pooled licensing and usage reporting, but does not require the same hardware, software, or personnel investment.
With Bentley-hosted licensing from SELECTserver, license administration is made simple.
For infrastructure professionals, there are many times when a network connection is simply not available, like when traveling away from the office, at a construction site, or when working from home.
To support the mobile workforce, SELECTserver enables users to work independently from the licensing server for up to 30 days at a time. And, users don't have to plan which application licenses they will need while away from the office; SELECTserver enables users to run any Bentley application within the 30-day window.
Any quick connection back to SELECTserver starts a new 30-day window for continued mobile work
For users expecting extended periods of disconnected use, or for those who want to check out application licenses from a license pool to a computer, SELECTserver enables extended check-out periods.
Licenses may be checked out for as long as a user requires, up to the remaining term of an account's SELECT agreement. Furthermore, a checked-out license can be generated by a manager for multiple applications including ProjectWise Passport and e-mailed to a remote user for local deployment.
Site administrators may also utilize check out restrictions to manage which products can be checked out from a site. The checkout time period may also be managed by product with checkout restrictions.
SELECTserver can manage pre-XM applications, such as MicroStation V8 2004 Edition and MicroStation/J.
In fact, SELECTserver can extend several benefits of the new system to existing applications, including the 30-day evaluation mode, extended periods for checked-out licenses, and the reliability of a system built on standard Web-based server technology.
The SELECTserver Gateway may be downloaded and installed separately from SELECTserver or together. Both options are now available to satisfy everyone's needs.
SELECTserver gives organizations the ability to maximize license use and minimize the burden of administration through the use of pooled and trust licensing.
Pooled licensing is the primary reason to deploy SELECTserver. With pooling, licenses are made available to any user when needed rather than being permanently assigned to individual computers.
With trust licensing, introduced with the release of SELECTserver, users will always be granted a right to run their Bentley software as long as they connect to the server once every 30 days. Trust licensing guarantees users that they'll always have access to their project tools and content to complete their work.
SELECTserver records product sessions on the desktop, and compiles pooled license utilization reports on the server.
SELECTserver reports provide valuable and necessary insight for managers, making licensing simple for users and managers.
SELECTserver is based on standard Microsoft technologies and Web-based protocols. Its Web Services architecture assures users they'll have a secure, reliable connection to SELECTserver through communications over HTTP and SSL.
SELECTserver and all XM Edition applications require at least Windows 2000 and IIS, or Windows 2000 / 2003 Server.
Through SELECTserver, managers will find it is easier to license their Bentley applications because Bentley has improved a number of license-related processes including: more automation for routine tasks, such as adding new products to an existing SELECTserver and a comprehensive view for simple management of Bentley applications.
