This support solution provides steps for encrypting the licensing transmissions sent from client machines to SELECTserver. The setting is disabled by default to provide compatibility with deployed SELECTservers.
Client machines routinely transmit usage data to a SELECTserver. This data includes sensitive information such as user names, machine names, and activation keys. By default, this information is transmitted in plain text for compatibility with deployed SELECTservers. Such servers normally are not configured with security certificates since they are running on the local network. However, since many users are now utilizing Bentley's hosted SELECTserver over the Internet (i.e. SELECTserver Online or Bentley CONNECT SELECTservices), security concerns arise. Fortunately, the License Management Tool provides an option to use the HTTPS protocol which utilizes SSL/TLS encryption. The following steps show how to enable it.
Important: As a general rule, only users utilizing a server named selectserver.bentley.com should enable enryption.
Once the setting is changed, all Bentley products on the client machine will utilize encryption when sending usage data. Note that the encryption setting applies to the current user only.
