Bentley’s Home Use Licensing Program was updated on January 1, 2013 to only utilize Bentley’s latest, key-based licensing technology.
Workstations utilizing home use licensing for software versions 8.5 and earlier will need to transition to newer software versions that utilize site activation keys. In order to help ease this transition, your organization may continue to utilize your current file based Home Use License until the expiration on 1/30/2013.
Additionally, your organization may request a Home Use Site Activation Key (either from the online License Tool or by contacting Bentley Licensing Support). The site activation key is available for immediate use, with an expiration date that coincides with your SELECT contract.
With the availability of both licensing types, your organization can migrate users to the newer software and licensing at your own convenience. However, all Home Use users will need to begin utilizing key based licensing by January 30, 2013.
As a Bentley SELECT subscriber, your organization is eligible for the Home Use Licensing program. Home Use Licensing grants your employees personal access to the latest Bentley software technology. Your organization is responsible for the deployment of the eligible software and licensing to the authorized employees for installation on a home computer for private use. Examples of private use may include hobbies and home improvement.
Use of this license is subject to the End User License Agreement (EULA) that accompanies the software AND the following Terms & Conditions:
To activate your product(s), you will need to enter an activation key and server name into the product when it starts up after installation. Users may update the site activation key for their XM Home Use products as follows:
When opening the program and the Product Activation Wizard opens:
1. Choose ‘SELECT subscriber with a deployed (local) SELECT Server' and click Next.
2. Enter selectserver-home.bentley.com in the Server Name text box.
3. Copy and paste your Home Use Activation Key (above) into the Site Activation Key text box and click Test Connection.
4. You should receive a message "Select Server and Activation Key Verified".
5. If you receive a message "An Error Has Occurred While Attempting to Verify the Server and Activation Key" there may be a problem with your internet connection.
6. If you receive a message "Server Does Not Support This Activation Key" verify that the Site Activation Key is entered correctly and that there are no spaces at the end of the key.
7. After the key verifies click Next twice.
8. Click Finish
If the Product Activation Wizard does not open:
1. Open a design file.
2. Go to the Utilities drop-down menu.
3. Select License Management.
4. The Product Activation Wizard may open at this point. Follow the steps above.
If the Product Activation Wizard still does not open:
1. While in the License Management Tool click on the Tools drop-down menu.
2. Select Product Activation Wizard.
3. Follow the steps above.

Activating a Home Use License
Q1: Are there any legal or commercial precedents that would limit a user creating a software download site for internal, home use distribution?
The context for the next three questions is that once a home use activation key has been issued to a user's employee, the user can only monitor use and they lose control over subsequent distribution. Periodic scheduled reporting in SELECTserver will monitor home usage on a monthly basis but this only provides a reporting service.
Q2: What are the conditions that would signify excessive monthly home usage?
Q3: If a user is unable to confirm the identity of the user of the home license, who is responsible for pursuing the withdrawal of the license?
Q4: If a user is unaware of an excessive or unauthorised use(s), what is the user's obligation to Bentley and who accepts liability for such a breach in the event of a litigation event?
The best place to ask a question or start a discussion would be on the appropriate Community Forum. For licensing, you can post on the SELECTserver and Product Activation forum here:
How many have had corp IT deny that Home Use exists or had download rights removed?
There is an alarming tendency for CORP IT to restrict the free entitlement given by Bentley for Home Use.
I have two job offers..one 5mins away where CORP IT do not allow Home Use at all because of Corp IT Policy!! (Took a week to get to bottom of that, got home license then had it cancelled once core IT found out)
Other is 1hr drive commute but is CAD manager role with stress but allows Home Use but no download rights just like last two ELS companies I have worked for.
Salary wise not much in it. or time as other job is 4 days
If I take the easier local CAD tech role I will have to give up Home Use and MDL messing around with Bentley..
I've had Home Use/ BEmploy since '95 when CSP agreements started after the Intergraph Bentley break up.
Who thinks Home Use should be offered as is in serious companies?
What would you do?
