Many sites implement firewalls and proxy servers for security reasons. It is more apparent than ever for the internal support teams to provide a secure and safe working environment for their users and perspective companies. This does not present a problem for communicating with the Bentley back end server. It just requires a little planning and configuration.  The tool for managing this information is the License Management Tool (LMT). All applications developed since the release of the “XM” product line have a License Management Tool (LMT). Legacy applications (prior to the release of the XM product line) do not have this tool but they connect to a SELECTserver Gateway for their licensing and the Gateway does have its own LMT so this article universally covers the Bentley product line.

The usual question is this one.

What Bentley (DNS) domains does my deployed SELECTserver need to have access to?

The following are the domains that access if required to:

buddi.bentley.com
selectserver.bentley.com
(for SELECTserver Gateway only)
appsnet.bentley.com
(for SELECTserver 08.11.xx.xxx or earlier)
ssla.bentley.com

The recent addition is the “ssla.bentley.com” (can be redirected to ssla.cloudapp.net) site which now is the update site for usage logs delivery automatically and manually for all SELECTserver applications.

What Bentley (DNS) domains are required to access the hosted SELECTserver?

selectserver.bentley.com
ims.bentley.com (for access to the SELECTserver administration site only)

Previously, SELECTserver supported a static IP address of 191.237.154.77, but that address is now obsolete. Bentley cannot support static IP address for selectserver.bentley.com.

FIREWALLS

Firewalls vary from site to site and are managed by your internal support team. It is not prudent to attempt to list all of the possible firewall developers and provided explicit details on their configurations. The rule of thumb is to have your internal support team make exceptions to the listed sites if there is a communication issue to the Bentley backend servers.

PROXY SERVERS

The LMT has a section for proxy configurations that can be brought into the mix if necessary. The location of the tool varies by Bentley application but is always available. For the sake of this conversation I will use the LMT associated with the gateway as the example. It is available from the START menu ALL PROGRAMS > BENTLEY > SELECTServer > Bentley License Management Tool.

Once the tool is open from the menu at the top select TOOLS >OPTIONS

Then select the Proxy Configuration tab. The proxy information specific to your site can be entered here.

The LMT does not decide how your proxy functions. We are just providing parameters to allow the application to function within and through your network topology and environment. If there is some internal issue that still does not allow the application to function through the environment you can also create PROXY EXCEPTIONS for the Bentley sites defined about. They are all necessary for proper communication and maintenance of the SELECTServer application.
