Creating a New Button

We will create a new button and add it to the Common Tools ribbon. A new button can be created with a key-in assigned to it. Clicking the button will execute the key-in. For our example, we will create a button for exporting the file to DWG, that is, a button for the key-in EXPORT DWG.

  1. In the Customize Ribbon dialog, select the Common Tools ribbon group and click the New Button icon.
  2. Name the button as Export to DWG.
  3. In the Properties section of the dialog, update the properties as follows:
    • Key-in – EXPORT DWG
    • Icon Name – Click the icon on the right of the property to open the Define Icon for Tool window. In it, select the DWGFile icon and click OK.
    • Size – Medium
  4. Click Apply

Creating a Split Button

Measurement tools are required quite frequently. We will create a new split button and add the most commonly used measurement tools to the Common Tools ribbon group.

  1. In the Customize Ribbon dialog, select the Common Tools ribbon group and click the New Split Button icon.
  2. Name the split button Measure.
  3. In the Properties section, set Size to Medium.
  4. Make sure Choose components from has Buttons selected.
  5. From the Choose components from list box, select Measure Distance and click Add.
  6. Similarly, select Measure Length and click Add.
  7. Select the Measure split button and move it above the Export to DWG button using the Move Up icon.
  8. Click Apply.

Completing the Workflow

Let us now complete the workflow by adding more ribbon groups and tabs.

  1. Add the following ribbon groups to the Drafting tab:
    • Attributes
    • Primary (Choose the one that has the tooltip - Internal Name: Mstn.PrimaryGroup)
    • Dimensioning
    • Tables
  2. Add the Common Tools ribbon group to the Drawing Aids tab that we included in the workflow in the previous blog.
  3. Create a new tab, Utilities, and add the following ribbon groups to it:
    • Common Tools
    • Reports
    • Drawing Scale
    • Geographic
  4. Add Annotate and View tabs.

A sample of the resultant ribbon customizations is attached here.

In the next blog we will learn how to show/hide ribbon components based on certain rules.
