New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 6 – Change Mesh Normal

A new Change Mesh Normal tool has been introduced as a Technology Preview feature in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 6. In addition to the old Reverse and Unify Normals features, the following new features are provided in this new tool:

  • Average Normals – Hides edges for facets whose angle is less than average normal value provided.
  • Make stored normal at vertices consistent with order – Vertex normals are changed to be consistent with vertex order.
  • Display Options -  Options are provided for display of face normals, vertex normal, or both in dynamics.
  • New Change workflow – The ‘Change Normals’ button in the tool settings window should be used to change normals as per the selected feature option.

The new Change Mesh Normal features can be used for analyzing mesh elements, creating consistent mesh elements, and modifying the display of mesh elements.

Accessing the New Change Mesh Normal Tool

The new tool is accessible from the Modify Meshes ribbon group in the Mesh tab of the Modeling workflow.

Let us consider few scenarios to understand how these features work.

Reversing vertex order around facets with vertex and face normals displayed

  1. Start the Change Mesh Normal tool. Select Reverse Vertex Order around all facets option and set Display as All.
  2. Select the mesh element.
  3. Click the Change Normals button.
  4. Enter a data point to accept the change.

Unifying normals with face normals displayed

  1. Start the Change Mesh Normal tool. Select the Make Vertex order consistent around all facets option and set Display as Face Normals.
  2. Select the mesh element.
  3. Click the Change Normals button.
  4. Enter a data point to accept the change.

Hiding edges based on angle value with vertex normals displayed

  1. Start the Change Mesh Normal tool. Select the Average Normal option and set Display as Vertex Normals.
  2. Provide angle value to hide normals below the range.
  3. Select the mesh element.
  4. Click the  Change Normals button.
  5. Enter a data point to accept the change.
    The mesh edges hide based on the averaging value provided. Watch the video below for a demonstration of the above steps.
