I've run into this problem on and off for years, and never been able to figure it out. I am using a cordless Logitech mouse (M510). There is a scroll wheel for a middle button. When I try to use this middle button in Mstation as a 'tentative' snap (as I originally learned) the button does not work. The wheel works as a zoom in/zoom out option.
I have been to "Button Assignments/Remap Buttons" and when I select 'Tenative' then go to the 'Button Definition Area' and try to click the middle button, the program does not recognize that I have clicked the middle button. It will work for other buttons on the mouse.
I have tried uninstalling Logitech Setpoint software - and still have the same problem.
I have tried removing the UPF file, this does not help.
I just tried an old corded microsoft mouse - and it works. I would happily buy another cordless mouse if that would solve my problem - but I don't want to throw my money away if it won't solve the problem.
Any suggestions on troubleshooting this?
Thanks.
Replace it with microsoft mouse!
I have had the same problem its the logitec mouse thats the problem...
At my last job I found that the microsoft cordless mice work very well especially the 5 button ones which let you assign things like plot and fitview to the side buttons near your thumb..
You can get pretty good deal on mouse and keyboard combo set from an office supply company with good return and warranty policy...
The keyboard also comes with extra custom keys for email , internet or custom load other programs it is pretty good and will last long time high quality...
Also excellent battery life and only needs a single usb dongle transimitter if you buy the combo set...
If you search logitec in this forum and archives you will see lots of people have had issues with logitec mice in the past...

I train microStation and try to convince participants not to switch the middle mouse button for tentative old school. 1. because AccuSnap does most snapping nowadays 2. because you loose very convenient 3D mouse functionality of the middle mouse button. 3. You can still do the "tentative jump-snap" the few times yuo may still need it by hitting (the default) left+right mousebutton. 4. save lots of those old school clicks aka your wrist from tenosynovitis.
I still use the tentative middle button not for snaps ( accudraw and accusnap do it better) but to quickly get geocoordiantes of points and objects the coords XY and especially Z are displayed in the message centre...
I find the middle button doesnt hurt my hand at the end of a long day, where as when I use the 2button cord method the tendons in the back of the hand ache a lot.
just for interest what extra 3d functionality am I missing ...with the middle button.....?
I could always change the tentative to one of the two side buttons instead if it was worth keeping the middle button for accudraw
FYI
The two cord button for tentative is old school as the two button mouse preceded the three button mouse which is sort of new school, but the digitising puck had 16 buttons and it preceded everything even before pc we used it on intergraph workstation with clix ( like unix)... then transitioned to dos version 5 with puck after Bentley took over Microstation from intergraph ... gee I'm old hahaha!....
@lorys: I am old - and old school as long sth. new proves better. Depending on the situation I pratically only work in one single view in 3D space. Exceptions e.g. setting up camera or animation paths.
In any situation I rotate my view along dynamically - without selecting the extra view command - in the middle of any command - just press Shift+MiddleMouseButton+Move to rotate the view, release and just go ahead with the operation at hand - always "AccuDrawing" ! This one alone saves X-ty clicks per hour. I will never want to miss this one again. BTW. to set the rotation pivot snap tentative  Left+RightMouseButton ;) if required ....
I remember the puck on the ancient VAX digitizer - I rather liked being able to archive and erase that. (Don't know if it is good showing off with this kind of mideval heritage though - appears to me now hearing Queen chanting "Who wants to live forever" seeing the Highlander now crossing swords )
Please give an example of your geocoordinates snap- Maybe switching on running coordinates just AccuSnapping is an altenative here? Most of this goes back more than ten years I guess. But still the old cr...stuff beeing trained it seems. Find out which mouse shortcut gems help to save you even more clicks. You find them in Help>Content.
Good and bad in every method... and every workflow and application needs be tailored to the job .. in my case I can copy paste the coord from the message center
In last job I used to get designs form all over the place and they seldom lined up to true world coordinates haveing usually come from acad or architects so
a quick tentative on the end of an element usually told me if they were even in the right ball park ... let alone the same hemisphere!
If I had similar features or common feature in my standard maps I could then ref my map and work out the shift required but usually just rejected the drgs and sent back...
The tentative was the quickest and I could paste it into email and tell them this was way way off the real world by a few million meters...
But I'll take a look at the way you have it for 3d and see if I like it better .. thanks for the tip...
