[V7] Steel.ma and Steel.tbl Files

Hello,

I was hoping someone could help me figure how to properly use the Steel.ma tool for MicroStation V7. After much searching several websites including Be Communities, I was only able to find the V7 version of this tool from this thread: MDL Applications for v7.

I attempted to run the tool on its own and of course it failed asking me for the table with this message "Unable to open Steel Table - ...steel.tbl". Based on this Be Community article Steel, I was able to find out that there is a steel97 format and a TriForma format and that the ProCAD steel99 application data was formatted to the steel97 format. I changed the V8i version steel99.stbl to steel.tbl hoping this would work but I still get the same message asking for the steel.tbl.

Does anyone happen to have the original V7 steel.tbl file or even the original .ma file? Possible I need the correct format and it is not the same format that the steel99 file is using? Would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Brahms

  • Is there any particular reason why you need to use MicroStation/J (assuming you are using MicroStation/J)? The reason for the question is even if you are forced to use a 15-year old program and try to "backport" a V8i workflow to that release, you could certainly use MicroStation V8i and Steel for MicroStation V8i to create what you need and then save that back to pre-V8 design files (or possibly even use MicroStation V8i in V7 Workmode).

  • My companies setup is a bit complex but we do in fact have to use MicroStation J and we are also using V8i simultaneously. Converting back and fourth would not be an option as we have had several issues and challenges with that in the past. V7 Workmode should cover what is needed, however, there are instances where J will need to be used. Fortunately as I just found out we have a tool for J that places steel so I no longer need the freeware steel.ma tool but thank your for your response regardless.
