support for SketchUp 2014?

Does Bentley have an estimated time to implement support for SketchUp 2014 file format?

I am running AECOsim SS5 and models can only be imported if the format is SketchUp 8 or lower. Also, our company has now standardized on the SketchUp 2014 and much of the online content I would like to use is now 2014.

There was also a 'bug' (feature?) in the last couple releases that prevents MicroStation from using the command "Utilities>3D Warehouse>place as cell" and forces you to go to SketchUp's website (via external browser) and save the files to your network then place that file in your DGN. This is very inefficient for our workflow and having to open a 2014 file and then save it down to a SketchUp 8 format is also very time consuming.

I would hope that we don't have to wait until the next release to get this feature enabled. If you wait until then, there will probably be another newer version to support.

It's not bug and this issue was announced and further discussed in MicroStation community. The problem is not in MicroStation, but after Sketchup was transfered from Google to Trimble, the structure and functionality of 3D Warehouse web was changed, so it's not possible to access the web from existing applications.

  • thanks for the info, there seem to be too many forums to search through in the communities to get a quick answer. the last question I asked regarding I-model exporting from Revit was transferred to many different forums until it landed in this one.

It still doesn't answer my initial question of support for the later formats. I also don't know if I completely buy the idea that it is not possible to access the web from existing applications since the commands "Utility>3D Warehouse>Import Model" does still work.

Since this is the case, it should be possible to "import" a model from the web and store it in the active model and use it as a cell. This should be able to be done 'transparently', maybe import it and then use 'place shared cells' as it would now be part of the actice DGN file?

Of course not, I am not Bentley developer and nobody than e.g. John Frampton (MicroStation product manager) or a developer responsible for this functionality is not able to answer it.

3D Warehouse web was changed: URL address, structure, internal organization and probably also code behind it. Is it difficult to believe what worked in the past don't work now because of this change? As far as I know there is no official API how to access to 3D Warehouse content, so there is no "lingua franca" the developers can use.

If anything "should be", it will never happen. It's much better to request a new functionality. If you are SELECT subscriber, in these days quite good place to discuss future enhancements is MicroStation Early Access community, which is dedicated to testing of the next version of MicroStation (btw, based on my tests it supports SketchUp 8 and SkeetchUp 2013, but not 2014, in the current build).

  • Hi,

If you install the vs 2013 x86 runtime from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40784 it should fix your problem with using the 3d warehouse tools with existing 8.11.9 builds.

With regards to Sketchup 2014, this will be supported in the up coming EAP2 64 bit Microstation release.
