Saving a DGN as a DWG causes microstation to fail.

When I save a file as a DWG it creates the file as normal and I can then do modifications on it, but once I try and save the file or close microstation and open the file again, Microstation terminates and a pop-up window saying that microstation has stopped responding comes up followed by another pop-up saying that it can not continue abort, retry, or ignore. It also says it makes a log of the issue in my user folder which is not there. This happens on other computers in the office. The log shows up on my coworkers computer. I sent a service request to Bentley with no response. Exception.log

  • Is it possible that maybe you can send us your DGN files including reference files you attempted to save as DWG?  One way to do that is to upload a zip file to ftp.bentley.com/pub/incoming/ or this communities secured file area.  This will allow us to try reproducing your crash.

  • I secure file uploaded the .dgn I used to create the .dwg, linking this thread and your ID
  • Thanks for sending a test file to us! However we do not have much luck recreating your crash. I see a missing ref file and a few raster attachments, but have not spotted anything in the file that should cause a crash. Maybe it has something to do with a specific workflow you have made in editing the saved DWG file prior to saving again?

  • We ended up getting a remote help session in the office on Friday. The individual we were on the phone/remote session had come to the conclusion that if saved as an earlier version of a DWG file (2000), it could be worked around. However, the issue of crashing was a result of a software glitch and has been posted in the service number for my corporation.
  • Glad you have found a workaround the problem. I'm still however concerned with what might have caused the crash. Do you mind posting details of steps you followed that eventually led to the crash?

  • I foolishly forgot to state what version we are using. This is 08.11.07.443. The steps that preceded both seats crashing microstation were pretty straight forward. We recently upgraded from an even older version of microstation. We have just recently needed to convert a file to .DWG format to use microstation in conjunction with another software Bentley has recently acquired. In doing so, my coworker and I both attempted to save the a .DGN as a .DWG; File>Save As>.DWG. On his file, in the process of saving, the completion bar got to 35% and an internet explorer box pops up stating an error. Microstation then makes a screen shake and ping noise and an error box pops up giving the directory for the exception log that was first posted. On his second file he was able to create the .DWG and then manipulate the contents. Upon hitting save his completion bar got to that exact 35% point and then the same prompts popped up, creating a second exemption log. At that point I began to try and replicate his results. I first tried the same .DGN he tried to save. I got his second result of a .DWG being created. I only attempted to close the file, as we have it set to save .DWG files on close, hoping it would be a quick fix. I was able to save the file and close properly, but when I went to open the .DWG I had just created the completion bar on opening got to 35% and then gave me the same pop up errors (internet explorer saying microstation had an error and the microstation pop up that gave me the directory for the exemption log). I then attempted this same operation on many other .DGN files and came up with the same results each time. We then got a remote session as I had stated and came up with the solution and the alternate option to update, again.

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions I will try and help as much as I can.
  • Thanks for providing details! A main difference between your workflow and ours used in this testing is workspace. We do not have your resource files such as linestyles and seed files. We have also tried accessing files via network but that is not a replica of your network. If at all possible, you may want to try manually uninstall 8.11.7.443 and RealDWG 2010, then reinstall 443 (which will automatically re-install RealDWG 2010). If the clean installation works, maybe you can look at your workspace for some clue.
