MicroStation 08.11.09.357 Why does saving DWG to DGN move dim text outside dim lines

When I save from DWG to DGN it moves the text outside the dim lines.

I’m unclear if this is a textstyle issue or dim style issue (since dim styles get their text from textstyles).

Opening the DWG in V8i (08.11.09.357) shows this (correct)

When I do File-SaveAs V8 format (incorrect)

  • my screenshots didn't make it into my post - attached is the Word doc showing the issue.

  • I suggest you repost this in the File Formats forum

    http://communities.bentley.com/products/interoperability/f/19567

You are much more likely to get your answers there.

  • I'm not sure what would cause this, has anybody else had this happen when a DWG gets saved to DGN?
  • Yes I have seen it. Not everything in DWG styles its 100% compatible with DGN styles. Again I would suggest you post your questions in the File Formats forum because thats where the people who actually do the programing for DWG are.
  • try and open the dwg with microstation , look at the message centre, you may have a font substitution issue,

If you have access to autocad or true view try and find out what the font name is .. then  it might just be a case of the right  font... this has happened to me  ta client  used and old isoXXXB font  and  microstation didnt have it... but I found a closer match eventually on the net and and it worked better text didnt  spill  out over the title block...

Also the dims outside doesnt that usually mean the text wont  fit inside the dim leaders  but it did in acad so it would appear the text using fonts available to mstn must be fatter and take up more room...

    Thanks Lorys.
We have about 200 DWG files coming in each month - we need to save to DGN without changing the dimensions.
Once a solution is found, we can batch convert.

just out of curiosity did you try the merge to see if it  worked?

FY I during convert are you letting mstn export any non supported acad fonts into the same folder the DGNs out put live in..., you may needed to move those to  the font rsc  folder later to view the dgns...clutching at straws here  but it might lead to something...

  • Lorys,

Good point, maybe I'm chasing the wrong issue. It's not a dimension style but a missing font instead.
Message center says "Replaced missing SHX font [dgn001] with [simplex.bigfont]".
I don't have font "dgn001" where is a good website to get fonts?

Tried opening a empty DGN and Reference Attaching DWG. Looked good. Did Ref Merge and the dimension jumped out.
I'm not sure how I would know if Microstation exports fonts... how would I find out?

    David,
I thought I am in the FileFormats forum as the header at the top says that.

    Thanks!

I see that now and apologize,  I clicked on the notification button and it moved me from the other forum to here without me realizing it.

  • Is anyone seeing the Stacked dimension in AutoCAD? (as in Top half of initial screenshot). I opened the dimExampledwg file in AC 2014 and it looked as it does in MicroStation. A Single line of text.
I am not able to open it using AC2000, Could that be the difference?

When I attached it as a Reference it said it was a A2007 release in the Attach dialog just above the Thumbnail image area, but still no difference One string of text (No Stacked Text).

ok now we are getting some where   either contact the  originators and ask for their fonts for acad ( shx) as the  font you mentioned is not an acad font I recognise or do trial and error in msnt  substituting the  font for a more conventional acad font  like the iso fonts , In one project I did last year I had to locate  iso3098b was a very old early acad font  and I had to add it to acad fonts folder, took me ages to find it on the web as it was very old..... see picture

Also in trial and error  use all the non True Types iso acad fonts you have first... they all have different width spacing and  I have  found you can keep changing font until you get the  best fit ... never perfect unless you have the real same font they used...
