AutoCAD with Embedded Raster Conversion to DGN

I have an AutoCAD file with an embedded raster and I need to extract the raster from the file because Microstation will not recognize the raster. As it is currently I cannot do anything to the raster.

How do I get that raster back in a conversion to Microstation DGN files?

  • Hello,
Can you specify the version of MicroStation you are using? It can be found in:
    HELP>ABOUT MICROSTATION
The version will be in the form of: 08.XX.XXX.XXX
What is the file type of the raster that you are using?
    Regards
    Derval Canny.

I unfortunately can't provide an example due to confidentiality reasons and that I do not know how it was attached to begin with. I just know that if opened with ACAD I can see the raster image and when I attempt to export it as DGN It's lost. The raster path in ACAD is simply Embed.

If I open the DWG file in microstation it shows an empty box and calls it a cell:ACAD_PROXY_ENTITY.

I did notice this time that an error message was present at the loading of the file:

Object Enablers are not required to open the file, but fidelity is generally improved if they are present. The missing enablers are listed below with information about the vendors that might help you find the enabler. If you believe you already have the enabler, verify that it is the correct version and properly installed.

Object Enablers are missing found for the following applications:

    In file 'C:\Users\XXXXXX\Desktop\XXXXXXXXXX.dwg', Model 'Model':

    Application: AECIIB
    Autodesk Raster Design
    www.autodesk.com
Enabler needed by 2 nongraphic objects, 1 graphic objects
  • The file tells me it's an AC1024 so that 2010-2012 I think. Though its common to receive files that are saved backward for compatibility.

AutoCAD must have added something like Descarts then along with a newer version of ACAD.

Sounds like I've got two things to work on. Talking to our admin about a newer version of Microstation to possibly resolve some compatibility issues. As well as trying to contact the group that provided the file.

I was hoping I was just missing something or was doing something wrong. Thanks for the help.
  • Autodesk Raster Design is a product that creates embedded raster objects which can only be enabled by its object enabler. You may find Autodesk Raster Design object enabler from Autodesk website, but be prepared that the OE may not work. Last I remembered, the said OE was not a true object enabler per Autodesk's own definition of an object enabler.  An object enabler should only depend on RealDWG, not on AutoCAD specific parts such as its GUI etc. The Autodesk Raster Design OE I had last seen depended on AutoCAD. It did not load into RealDWG.  Therefore it cannot be used in other RealDWG applications except for AutoCAD. Autodesk has been made aware of the issue but did not indicate to us whether or not the issue would ever be addressed. My recommendation is that if their latest OE still does not load into RealDWG and you are an Autodesk Raster Design customer, you may want to request Adesk to fix this OE so that you can use it beyond just AutoCAD. Odds are that they may listen to you as a customer.

  • I think your only real option is to contact the acad dwg author and ask for the raster and if  possible ask them to trace a  polygon around the raster edges.. just in case its not geo referenced,  or  if you can open the acad file in acad your self  draw the polygon yourself and also ask for the source raster to be sent to you.. then after conversion  you can open the dgn file and reattach the raster yourself  either georefed or  manually by the polygon... best one  can suggest without a copy of the  dwg  and dgn to look at  what is happening...

  • Don: doesn't the interoperability agreement cover this situation?

    Thanks,

  • The SDK exchange agreement between Bentley and Autodesk only covers libraries that read/write native DGN and DWG file format. From an end user's standpoint, data types created by MicroStation and AutoCAD are covered. The agreement does not extend to add-on products.

That said, this is not a problem specific to Bentley users - it also is a problem to Autodesk users. Any RealDWG based program that is not an add-on of AutoCAD should display the same issue.
