Interesting problem.

1. Would it be possible for Mstn to save the parasolid data in the dwg after the first time the dwg is opened or referenced in Mstn? Sort of a Object Enabler for Mstn?

2. A multi-threaded batch converter to convert the dwg's to dwg's with parasolid info.

I am sure that the removal of ACIS from Mstn has good reasons behind it, but there should be some compensatory measures to offset the effects of this move.

Bentley has lost this battle already, look for statistics and counts about AutoDesk and Benltey user world wide! Or watch how much projects are DWG or autodesk based (Revit).

Agree, Update 10 have improvements but still a lot of problems with AEC objects from Autodesk stuf.

I know Bentley is working on it and I deliver a lot of date to test, but we need a better solution because Autodesk is used more and more but I don't want to change!

Hi Stefan,

as Don H. Fu explained in his original answer, all ACIS solids from DWG have to be converted to Parasolid at background when DWG is opened. Because this thread is quite old, maybe you should create a new post about Update 10 specifically, so it will be more visible to Don and other Bentley people resposnible for DWG implementation.

yes the mentioned dwgs are made of 3D-solids only.

Actually they are not native dwgs but have been exported from modelers like CREO, Catia or Inventor by our sub-suppliers.

Hi Stefan,

can you provide more details about the file(s) you used for testing? E.g. whether it's plain 2D or there are 3D ACIS solid, the size or a number of elements etc.

As Don H. Fu mentioned in his original (and 2 years old) answer, how ACIS solids are managed when DWG is opened was changed in CONNECT Edition completely and it's one from reason why it's so slow. So it would be nice to know whether you have e.g. DWG without solids, but also too slow to open.

We also have a lot of issues with referencing dwgs in CE.

For Example opening a 3D Master File with lots of large dwgs attached takes:

- in MS-V8i SS4: : 5:40 Minutes

- in MS-CE Update 9: 37:30 Minutes !!!

- in MS-CE Update 10: 29:10 Minutes

so Update 10 was a LITTLE improvement BUT CE IS STILL A SHOW STOPPER for our company.

The analyst filed a defect #660429 for this issue and it is currently being reviewed. You will be notified when this defect has been addressed in a future version of MicroStation.

CONNECT is not showing all objects in DWG-files. Surfaces disappears or are shown as "wireframe". This is a big issue. I have filed a service ticket about this issue.

the problem is that i received the file maded in Autocad ( as i remember 2014 )
and i don't want to edit it - i just try to open it as reference or just open.

Old Microstation v8i open it fast but elements are in wrong positions etc... CONNECT open it correctly in place
but it takes many minutes

Prior to CONNECT, when you edited an ACIS solid element, it gets translated to Parasolid before it can be edited. CONNECT has simply shifted the translation from editing to file opening. The net timing cost of the B-rep translation for the same element has not changed, but that has freed editing tools from overhead added from the on-fly translation.

Do you know your case really is from ACIS translation? If you can share your file we can take a look.

I have tried to toggle "Block Attributes as Tags" but I did not see any difference. I have a large dwg file (50mb) and it took 30sec to reference that file in Microstation v8i SS4 and in Microstation CONNECT it took over 15 minutes.
There must be something wrong here, if this is the case then CONNECT will be useless for someone working with a lot of references for example dwg and IFC.

We have known two things that can impact DWG open performance:
1) Lots of solids/surfaces in DWG file - ACIS kernel is no longer available in CONNECT hence additional time required to translate ACIS bodies to Parasolid.
2) Lots of attributes that are out of sync in file - by default CONNECT converts DWG attributes as item types which require well defined attribute definitions vs attributes. Among other things, an attribute that does not have a definition, or a definition that does not have an attribute instance, is considered out of sync which impacts file open performance. In this case, turning on toggle "Block Attributes as Tags" shall make a difference. Obviously you will not have item types after file opened. But you still can manually convert tags as item types after file open.
