File is done in Autocad propably 2014 . And its very, very slow to open.

In Ms V8 is not so good but "ok", few minutes... but in Connect about 20 - 30 minutes.

Fu

You're right, Jan. In V8i where ACIS kernel exists, referencing a 3D DWG would be faster because there is no additional Brep translation, but large models may chock at x32 memory address limit. Among other things, allowing an ACIS body sitting in the file until it needs to be edited can potentially cause 3D tools to fail due to Brep translation error. Often times the user might not even know the origin of the body it was created therefore unable to fix or re-import the bad body. Stopping the bad Brep elements and fixing them up front will improve the success rate for 3D editting at later times. The trade off is that the Brep translation time is added to file opening/referencing as folks have observed here.

RE: Big file problem

Hi Don,
We will have to look into that (weighing trade offs).
It would be great, also to know all pros and cons can be interesting.

What I see as quite big problem in the current workflow, when B-reps are converted during the file opening as you described at this thread, is that it's used also for DWG referencing ... at least it seems to me from quick testing, where the file shared by martinezx always crashed MicroStation because of lack of memory (seems 16Gb is not enough) after very long time doing something regardless it was opened directly or referenced.

What I know from my customers they often receive updates from external people and companies daily. To insert new DWG > DGN conversion step there to solve the problem DWG files are opened substantially longer because they are processed in a different way, is probably not possible.

With regards,

An easy way to tell is SmartSolid (or SmartSurface) - it is an element that contains Brep topology and geometry, and is handled by a Brep modeler. Whenever you make a change to such an element, it is the Brep modeler that does the most work behind the scene.

RE: Big file problem

[quote user="Don H. Fu

I can confirm that you are hitting the B-rep translation. I thought of importing SAT as an alternative since you do not edit DWG file, but that will not save you on time as it is still a Brep translation. We will look at this a bit more and see if we can find a better alternative. But for what you need now, saving as V8 DGN is probably your best bet. I'm not particularly surprised or concerned by the file size increase from 300mb to 400mb. This is mainly because Autodesk ShapeManager and Parasolid are two different modelers after all. While they both model B-reps, they have different file formats, resulting in different file sizes. However, after you saved DWG as DGN, you should be able to reference your file like you would in V8i. Should you need to edit solids in the future, you may find that Parasolid is more reliable.

RE: Big file problem

File(s) successfully uploaded

RE: Big file problem

I'm sending now once again
