GML support ?

Any chance to add GML support in Microstation ? There are so many cities now in GML format...

Qgis not working well , FZK viewer too..

  • Hi,

Any chance to add GML support in Microstation ?

you can try to add this request to Ideas section.

Unfortunately this good idea how to collect inputs from users has become "black hole" where you can post anything and you will never receive any reaction or response from Bentley how idea was evaluated and what will be further steps (99.9% of comments are from other users, never from Bentley).

  • 2nd that, Bentley seems resistant to any added functionality that competes with other Bentley products. I got a few of these bones as well.

Connect r17 10.17.2.61 self-employed-Unpaid Beta tester for Bentley

  • Yes, 3d geometry - now i use FZVK viewer to merge and convert but not so comfortable and crash sometimes

  • Agree. How many times have I been asked to provide SHP files...I don't do GIS. I don't want to do intensive GIS work - that's another whole field of industry. I don't NEED Bentley Map - the capability gets used once or twice a year - but I have to use something extra to generate SHP files because MicroStation doesn't do that on its own.

  • Hi Mary,

but I have to use something extra to generate SHP files because MicroStation doesn't do that on its own.

In my opinion you are talking about oposite process than what has been original question: How to use / import specific formats (like (City)GML) to MicroStation, not how to export them from MicroStation.

They are two quite separate universes with oposite requirements to code complexity and required data quality:

To implement data import is often very complex task for developers (data standard are extremely complex and flexible), but data can be typically "any quality" as long as they conform to the format requirement. When, as in the discussed case, only partical support is required, it's less demanding, but the difference is not big, because the importer code still has to understand the whole format.

Vice versa to implement data export is easier for developers, because you know what data will be exported, but requirements for data quality are much higher, e.g. not all data can be exported to SHP, WFS or IFC format, because these formats define specific requirement to data structure, topology etc.

It's the reason why in my opinion to think about SHP (or IFC) export from MicroStation is bad idea and cannot be solved easily, because SHP requires topologically correct GIS data, whereas MicroStation allows to work with topologically incorrect data, whereas Bentley Map automatically maintain some level of topology corectness. The same is for IFC, where ABD knows building objects so it's easy to convert them, whereas objects in MicroStation can be "any".

  • But it is relevant in that

Bentley seems resistant to any added functionality that competes with other Bentley products.

I agree that Import and Export are very different things, programmatically. But the comment that Bentley is resistant to overlapping technology still applies to either. While exporting SHP-type data from MicroStation is les than ideal, it is nonetheless something that we are often asked to do, often by project managers and clients (government officials) who neither understand nor appreciate the complexities and (in)accuracy of data.

Even with my (very!) limited knowledge of data types and formats, I know that more support for those various formats on a basic level would be helpful to project design and plans production. So many of us do not need the entire data package that Bentley Map provides, and it is another software package that we have to learn, just to generate some "dumb" graphics from GIS or to give the city manager the "dumb" linework in GIS format.

  • Same with DTM format. Today i receive DTM file and... sorry can't open
