As the subject says why can't I copy and increment text in a .dwg? If I create a text (say DLG1) I can't increment to DLG2, as it tells me that it is a text node. Why?
As the hint suggested, it's the text node that prevents you from using this tool. If you keyin "place text" instead, you may be able to create single line texts hence do incremental copy. I believe the discussion of Word Processor creating text nodes in DWG workmode has occurred before but don't remember where it ended up. I think that Word Proc should only enforce text nodes when it cannot be saved as a single line text per DWG workmode restriction. Unconditional enforcing text nodes seems unnecessary.

Can this be part of the next major release?
I'm told that copy & increment shall be made to allow text node in next major release.
Is that the one that is soon to beta?
The "next major release" is the one we are currently focusing on. Availability as a beta will be communicated via various means, Be Communities being one of those avenues.
