Microstation V8i SS3 with AMD Ryzen CPU

Hi, anybody here using AMD Ryzen 5 CPU for Microstation rendering?

Is there any problem using this CPU for V8i SSE3?

I'm planning to upgrade my CPU to AMD Ryzen on my desktop.

I'm MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 3) user, and mainly doing the 3D rendering.

Thank you

Iman

  • You might find users with more experience with rendering in MicroStation within the Visualization Forum.

Another suggestion if you are upgrading your CPU to improve the rendering would be to also upgrade to the latest version of MicroStation CONNECT Edition (Update7).

When a CPU vendor introduces a new design and claims it to be compatible with the x86 instruction set, then we should believe their claim.  What difference is there between AMD selling a new design (e.g. Ryzen) and Intel selling a new design (e.g. Kaby Lake)?  The only occasion that I recall when one of those manufacturers got it wrong was Intel: an early release of the Pentium had a design error in its floating-point processor.  That was in 1994, and Intel quickly fixed the error in a processor revision.  People continue to buy Intel processors despite that rather public demonstration of fallability.  However, if AMD wants to compete against Intel in the processor business, they can't afford to get it wrong.

Probably a Ryzen processor will work well as an engine for MicroStation.  I would be more concerned if you plan to install Windows 10 on your upgraded computer and discover that MicroStation V8i SS3 is not certified for that version of Windows (you need V8i SS4 or MicroStation CONNECT for Windows 10).

Let us know how you get on!
