Invisible toolboxes

Hello everybody, is there a known issue with the user interface in MicroStation V8i (SS2) - Version 08.11.07.446 (German) about curtain toolboxes being completely invisible on the top and bottom docking positions due to a recent Microsoft Security Update on Win7 OS (64 bit)? And that the already docked toolboxes can’t be undocked at all. This is exactly what’s happening on my customer’s computer systems (German Automotive Industry) that started a couple of weeks ago and it still hasn’t been fixed yet! It isn’t possible to work decently anymore. Does anybody know when this issue is going to be solved? Up to now everything on my own computer is working just fine. I’m just concerned of installing any recent Microsoft Security Updates on my own computer causing the very same problem. Thank you.

  • As explained on the Wiki relating directly about the disappearing toolbars:

    communities.bentley.com/.../15905.toolboxes-disappear.aspx

Bentley developers have been working closely with Microsoft developers and have identified the exact cause and have determined a proper fix for this issue.

The fix involves modifying a Windows Operating System file, therefore, both Microsoft and Bentley have been rigorously testing to ensure this change resolves Bentley’s issue but does not affect the stability or security of the Microsoft Windows platform.

Both Bentley and Microsoft understand the impact and urgency of this issue.  A public hotfix is being tested and will be released when it is ready.

This particular issue has not been related as a problem associated with the Nvidia graphics card drivers.

  • Hello,

Sorry, after new start this morning, the toolboxes desappear again.  It was too good to be true....but I thought for a moment.

    I'll wait for hotfix.

  • If your system or your companies IT department have defined for the Windows Updates to be automatically installed then this problem can continuously occur even when you have uninstalled the Windows Security Update that is affecting your system. You may need to halt the automatic updates or advise your companies IT department to halt them.

As explained in the Work-Around section on the previously supplied Wiki, you can just undock the affected toolbars from the top or bottom of the application window. This would need to be performed after you have uninstalled the affected Windows Security Update and before it had been automatically reinstalled.

  • Hello Andrew,

My IT department don't agree to halt the automatic updates !! So I must every week uninstall KB2973201 and the toolboxes reappear again and all is OK for the moment !!

I hope you will find an issue very soon.

  • Bentley developers have been working closely with Microsoft developers and have identified the exact cause and have determined a proper hotfix for this issue.

The hotfix has been released and is available here:

    support.microsoft.com/.../en-us.

Bentley has done a number of checks on this hotfix and found all situations of the disappearing toolbox resolved.

The Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 updates are available for download. To download you will need to enter an email address that Microsoft will use to notify you in case they need to recall the update for any reason.

Please make sure to thoroughly read the document that comes with this KB2998984 hotfix and double check to see if your system conforms to the prerequisites mentioned by Microsoft.

You can download and install immediately by going to the link above, or wait until the fix will automatically be installed as part of the updates that come with Microsoft's "October Patch Tuesday (2014)".
