Am I simply out of luck? Or is there some possible way I can get this to work? I'm very new to this forum (just joined 15 minutes ago), does anyone know if it's possible for me to get a free update to a version that I can use on this machine?

Could a virtual machine (VM) be set up to run software this old? I run some expensive 20-year old raster editing software written for Win NT 4.0 under the XP VM in Windows 7. Don't know what Windows 8 or 8.1 has for VM options.
"We installed a new road; your car is out of date. You have to buy a new car."
...never been a fan of how operating systems control the consumer to purchase new software.
Although a bit off-topic, the analogy is more like this...
"I have a new car, but want to put a door on it from a car that is 20 years old."
