Text Masking over Reference drawing - Not Working

Question

If I put text in the same native drawing as objects/lines/geometry, text masking will work. 
 But, if I put text with masking over lines/objects/geometry from a reference file, the items from the reference file are not masked. 
 Is there a toggle for this somewhere? I need to annotate in a drawing over a reference drawing.

try changing the update sequence of the reference files. 
Reference file dialog>settings>update sequence - make sure your active design file is at the bottom of the list.
