AccuDraw Settings Don't Stick

The daily frustration: AccuDraw seems to control more than just drawing. If I place text, the relative angle that it goes in at is apparently controlled by the AccuDraw settings. AccuDraw keeps reverting to Auxiliary rotation (Settings>AccuDraw, Coordinate tab), instead of View, which is where I have set it about a million times by now.

Alt-F does nothing for me.

How do I get this setting to stay where I put it?

  • Hi David,

The AccuDraw settings are stored in the active user preference file .upf.
When that .upf file is read-only, shared with other colleagues (on a network drive), or for whatever reason is broken, you will not be able to properly save the changes.

Please check if you do have full access to that file and that it is not shared with your colleagues (who can override the settings you have changed). If you have full access, it could well be that the file is broken maybe because of a crash of your operating system or of MicroStation.
The location of that file can be found via Workspace>Configuration. Look for variable: MS_USERPREF.

When you are in that window, I suggest you also look at the variable: MS_USERPREFSEED.
If there is a definition for it, please check that that file is not based on an older version of MicroStation (the date of the file may be an indication that it is).

Once you have found the location, exit MicroStation and rename or remove that file and start MicroStation again.
Before starting MicroStation, it is not a bad idea to also clean up your MicroStation TEMP folder (MS_TMP), just to make sure that files saved in that location are not causing problems.

Upon the restart, MicroStation will check if there is a seed preference file (MS_USERPREFSEED) and make a copy of that to be your new user preference file, or in case there is no definition, automatically create a new preference file with default settings.

When you have a dgn file open again, check that the settings for AccuDraw will save by using File>Save Settings.

  • sigh. Now my AccuDraw is staying where I set it, but I cannot get text to rotate to the *view* when I place it. I'm going home.
  • Thanks Phil.

I did have a corrupted upf about a month ago that Tim helped me track down. after I had my workspace (referring to the working space layout, tool boxes, menus, custom tools, etc.) almost completely disappear - obviously broken in other words - I had an couple day old version of my upf restored and it was back to where I had been.

The article mentioned that something is causing this. I don't know mstn well enough to track this down. But I regularly notice all kinds of inconsistent behavior. like what caused this thread - my text, either as a text element or placed note, in a Sheet Model, was rotating to the ACS, always, until I set AccuDraw away from Auxiliary to View. It would work for one placement, then AccuDraw would revert back to Auxiliary. Now the AccuDraw settings stay put, but my text is still rotating to the ACS, and not to the view. I have no idea why , but I have seen this behavior repeatedly.

I also get erratic behavior with dimensions, especially Place Notes. or with changing a text style parameter which then changes all kinds of existing text in the dgn making it huge or miniscule - but not all, and not apparently consistently (some big, some smalll, some seems to drop the annotation character even though I keep annotation locked). Or when changing a text parameter for a selected element(s), like justification or height, it also changes the spacing to something outrageous, like 300. Strange things happen in Design Model, but especially in Sheet Model space. I also have all kinds of issues plotting - getting a filled or hatched background to plot in the correct draworder, especially with ref's, always having ref's plot on top, having hatches occupy more space than they were defined with (bar scale plotted solid across the whole scale instead of the alternating spaces where I placed a dense hatch), having substitution text ignored (inconsistently - one day it works, next ot doesn't, or some never work correctly at all), and it goes on. I get so many weird things happening that I wonder sometimes if I am breaking it, or is the install bad or ... ? maybe there is a link between the odd behavior and the upf going bad, I do not know.

I will start a new thread on how to get my text to rotate to the view instead of the ACS.
  • double sigh. I was wrong. the only reason that AccuDraw settings were sticking is that it was turned off (it'd be nice to be able to tell with button shading or some other kind of indicator when AccuDraw is turned on or off - I can only tell by placing a line or something). I turned AccuDraw on (after noticing that it was off when I wanted to place a horizontal line) and it is again reverting to always being set to Auxiliary, even before I can begin the place line command. text and lines are rotating that way by default also. The text is rotating to the ACS no matter what AccuDraw is set to. Lines allow AccuDraw guidance but are aligned to the ACS. man, I need to get some production instead of constantly tracking this stuff down.

  • AND! the ACS lock reset itself at some point today (can't tell this either, without using the pulldown menu) and AccuDraw went back to ACS rotation. man, this can be really frustrating. I used the other stuff for 20 years, so it isn't like I am a novice user here. but some times I wonder ...
