Both applications windows opening on the same monitor

I work remotely from home. I recently have changed my "connection" to work from a VPN to a remote virtual machine.  The remote virtual machine is great and much more stable.

However, every time I open Microstation for the first time, both Application windows open on the primary monitor.  This was not a problem when I was on the VPN.  It's just a minor nuisance, but a nuisance all the same.

  • I think your  user preferences are on the virtual machine and  you  cant save changes..

Try this test  drag a tool pallet to the top bar save setting exit msnt completely and restart microstation if the change has been retained then its not the user pref file  and we'll need to think of another possiblity....

  • I can save changes. I tried the test, as you suggested, without fail. Thanks anyways.
I'm at a loss as to why. The virtual machine has to be the key, since that's really the only change, but I don't know what exactly.

  • ok then ...

by default  which is the  primary monitor  left  or right?  in which screen does  mstn  splash show up in,

when the mstn manger  opens which screen does it land..

When you tell mstn  in prefs  that  you want two sessions at once... does it then next time  create  both screens on the same  monitor?

Can you drag one window across to the  other  monitor  do a save setting and  restart mstn .. did it  hold? what does revisting the  pref show  ticked or unticked?

Back in the old days  with win 95 we had to tell windows that the screen was twice as  wide  in  windows desktop view setup ie the resolution double wide   not mstn,  then in mstn dragged the  second  window  over to the  right  hand  monitor  maybe that would work in your case too...

  • My primary monitor is on the right.

I'm not sure what you mean by "mstn manger", but every time I start MSTN up, everything is on my primary monitor.

I have my preferences set to open two applications windows. It does that just fine and I move the second window to the secondary monitor, save settings, close the program, but still will open everything on the primary. Both my windows stay setup the way I like them individually, but the second window which is has my level display, references, element info, project manager, etc...just won't stay put to the monitor I assign it.

Everything is really as I like it, except for the nuisance of the second window won't appear on the secondary monitor upon start up. I have to drag it over every time. It's really just a nuisance and not critical, but would be nice to have it gone.
I have bigger issues that have come up with my VBA applications not all working anymore, but I have our IT people, the ones that set up the virtual machine, helping with that for now. Besides, that's a whole different topic.

It just dawned on me that the virtual machine is Windows 8.1. I'm not a fan of this operating system, but that's beyond my control. Maybe there is some answer there?

Thanks for all your effort. Please let me know if you have any other ideas.
  • In the upper left corner of the application window you should have a MicroStation icon. Left mouse click on it. In the options there should be a "change screen" or "swap screen" option. Try selecting this, rather than dragging the application window over to the secondary monitor.
