Creating a ground profile line over a mesh

Hi,

I have a mesh which depicts the ground along a railway line. I would like to create a line string / B spline curve along the edge of the railway line (approx 10-20m from the track) for quite a distance. Basically I what I would like to do, is place tree cells along this profile line every 5m apart.

I can do this manually, but I am wondering if there is a quicker alternative?

Thanks

Matt

The Populate tool will do what you want to do.

You can draw a 2d path and use the Populate Along Path option to place the trees on the terrain guided by the 2d path.

    Keyin:  CIVVIS POPULATE

This populate along path is not in plain mstn v8i ss3, it may be in another vertical like inroads...

I suggest you use the drape 2 d line on 3d mesh via stencil tool in visualisation tools then use the  place points along line  with the cells option instead of points.

I have used this method quite often since it was first made available in ss3.. as we had no access to InRoads or other civil tools...

  • The Populate tool is in plain Microstation ss3. No other vertical required.
  • Wow your right!!!!

Its with the stencil tool pallet .. never noticed it before ... I tried to use your keyin  but it didnt  work for me.. but its definitely in the visualization 3d tools

but this keyin  finds the pallet group DIALOG TOOLBOX POPULATE even if your in 2d file...

Great tool I'll make use of it more often now... thanks again..
