How do you import a .obj file into MicroStation.

How do you import a .obj file into MicroStation.  Using SS2.   Do I have to convert it first? I have a bunch of .jpg and a .mtl file in the same directory as the .obj file.  I see that others have done it, but I don't see anything under the import feature.  Thanks

  • Double click on Bentley desktop icon, or within M-Sta go to File > Open. From the "File Open" dialog. Set the "Files of type:" to *.obj, find the location and open the file. You can then Select the element(s) and Copy to the clipboard and in a MicroStation file (3d) you can Paste into the file.

  • Yes I got the file to open. Thanks for the reply. There are .jpgs that in the same folder that I can see are draped over the building, but they are real blocky. Not very familiar with the rendering and materials and getting them to show up correctly. The .mtl file is in the same folder with the .obj file and the jpgs. Any help to get it to look better would appreciated.
  • That is more toward the Visualization Forum. ?Blocky? Are you seeing the pixels of the image draped over the surfaces? or is the surface itself rough?. Without sample file(s) that would be hard to tell you what exactly to do other than, play with the Material editor (Settings > Rendering > Materials) till you get what you want. I don't know if M-Sta. will read a .mtl or the .jpgs files that is something that the Visualization guys would know.

  • Yea I posted it over there too. I'm pretty sure MS will read the Materials file, but I haven't used them in years. Not sure how to upload pictures and files here. Hopefully the visualization guys can help out. Thanks again.
  • FWIW, this thread should be continued in the duplicate thread over in the Visualization forum.
