Turn-off Level in Ref file, But not turning off in Active file even with ref display overrides set to "Never"

Hi,

I have a active file with a master ref file attached to it.

The ref file is set with: Live Nesting 1, and Display Overrides to "Never" so I can use the ref file level setting to control my level display in the active file.

But for some reason I'm working with this active file, and when I go to turn-off a level in the ref it's not turning off in the active file.

Am I missing something, I thought if you set a ref with "Display Overrides to Never" the ref control the level display in the active file..Please help

Thank you,

  • How are you turning the level off? Global Freeze or Global Display? Are you sure you are choosing the correct file in the tree view of files?

  • to just add more info to the discussion

If I have a nested ref file attached and in the  ref manager  near the bottom rhs there is a level overrides set to never..

When this happens I cannot turn off display of any levels, change attributes etc by level or by overrides to any ref file  in te nesting or the ref file either..

    BTW I hate that!

I have to go to the nested file it self and make sure the same overrides set to never is set to always and then turn off etc in the nesting  .. then retunrn to my original active drawing forth  changes to take effect...

So I dont  think the button means overrides in the sense of by use of  level overrides  but  either never allow to make changes to levels and attributes  or always allow changes...

  • Sorry, I've been away for a while and was not able to follow up on this. In my opinion it is better to use the Global Freeze option in files that I want levels to be turned off. Level Display only works for specified views. Using Level Display you need to Save Settings in order for it to take affect so if you forget to Save Settings you loose what you had set. I have my preferences set to automatically save settings on exit. Global Freeze turns of the Levels in all views and you do not need to Save Settings. It is standard practice in my office to use the Global Freeze in sheet files to keep from inadvertently turning levels on that we do not want to see in the sheet files.

  • Thanks mwlong and lory for the good tips..I think I'll try out mwlong idea, I guess the only reason i use the level display is because i like to use the "turn off by element" function where in the global freeze way I usually have to hover over the line and then manually search through the layer manager to turn it off..if there was a way to do that more directly I think that would be great. but i do see the benefit of using global freeze
  • A good way to freeze a level by element is to go into the Level Display Dialog. At the top of the dialog is a drop down list that is normally set to View Display. When the list is expanded you will see Global Display & Global Freeze. Set this to Global Freeze then when you select an element to turn off a level it will be frozen instead. Just be sure that others are aware of this setting. It is not a well known function.

  • Yet another problem with nested in sheet model with  set to never for level overrides

using  projectwise may also complicate this...

I have mixed format DWG and DGN  not my  preference but  client is the  client..

I go to the nested file has DWG  attached I want  to edit some text there .. no problemo just use activate

make the changes and deactivate save setting and  reopen  right ? Wrong  no changes happened to stick!

I had to go back and repeat the  process and do a save file for changes to stay there while in DWG mode , save settings didnt  cut it ..

But just in case I opened next time another one  with exchange did the changes and saved  all good but  this was a real time waster!

I processed about 5 drgs before I notices the  pdfs had no changes!

Well live and learn and watch out for DWGs ion your nestings... also level colour changes didnt stick first time round through the activate save settings... for DWG..

Well that's what  it  looks like was happening  never struck this before normally  I avoid  nesting DWGS in with DGNs in nests with lots of ref files...tends to make network run real slow to open your dgns........
