This started in the EAP forum but could someone at Bentley confirm when the steel utility is to be upgraded to work with CONNECT?

If anybody does as you ask, they are risking action from Bentley's lawyers. Although an example Steel is delivered with the CONNECT SDK, the source code is clearly marked with Bentley Systems' copyright. Copyright means that no-one has the right to copy that source code. Without express written permission from Bentley Systems, no one has the right to post the built version on this Forum or otherwise distribute the app. to any other public place.
However, if you have a SELECT contract then you have that example source code and you can build the app. for your own use.

It appears there are many folks that are interested in having it. It is a nice little utility that is very useful and simple to use. If that is all it takes then why not?? It had been available for years.... Thanks, mark.
then place all the sections you would use into a dgn using steel and create a cell for each in a library and call it Steel sections and the std name ie Steel_USA.
this old method is faster than the new multimodel new method for cell creation... then this new cell library would be available in CE instead of steel,
If you do end up doing this for USA I suggest you up load your efforts here and others will do the same for other national standards...
I wont be going to over to CE for as long as possible but if you need this then this is a fairly easy work around...
This thread is getting too long... maybe need to split it off and call it alternative to Steel for CE

Not really. Just means that we would be doing the work that, I believe, you should be doing! In a busy work environment we don't have time to create all the steel sizes we need, especially as we only need them in 2D. 3D is a complete waste of time. We have Revit for that!

I agree for 100%. I am not professional planner and my experience come more from "geo professions", but to offer a way how create own profile looks a bit out of reality. To hear "the variations do not come from any standard, but are driven by construction needs" in the presentation made me laugh.
I agree with Stuart many users just need to place profile based on chosen standard (US, European, Australian etc.) and it's exactly what old application did. And there are profiles definitions available, so it's quick and simple task. Until MicroStation CONNECT Edition provides the same functionality, people will complain and will ot migrate.
The value is "choose from standard library and place the profile", not "I can define own parametric profile".

We have not migrated because of this - worse yet I haven't even found out what I'm missing by not using CE (I have both installed on office machine - but the need to draw steel shapes in 2D every day keeps me from opening CE.
I agree. Allhough i personaly prefere to use connect edition, the lack of connect steel utility keeps me from uninstaling v8i. I would realy like to see if there are a timeline for this to be implemented for connect edition.
Kind of glad to see that I'm not the only one who wants a CE version of Steel.
Come on Bentley do the right this for your customers and get this (and ATools) updated. This would definitely help with getting our users over to CE

... or to open source codes so somebody else will be able to migrate them to CONNECT Edition.
... or (in the case of steel.ma) to provide the same set of profiles definitions for parametric placement as was delivered with old steel.ma. Without it, the presented parametric tools cannot be treated as the replacement.
When it will not happen, maybe somebody will lost his patience and will write own application with the same functionality ;-) But you now, there is never enough free time to do it :-(
