item types and areas

I am trying to define a property of an item type so that - when I attach that item type to a shape - the area of that shape is shown in the property. I hope this is possible at least now? Can anyone point me to some documentation?

  • Hi Luc.

A shape element already has an Area property.
There is currently no mechanism for associating an Item property with a property of the element to which it is attached.
For documentation, open the Item Types dialog and press F1.

  • Paul,

I try to express me clearer. See attached screenshot.

I defined an Item Type "Lokaalfiches" and I attached this to the shape in the view. Now I would like to have the Area Property filled in automatically where I place the red ellipse.

I thought I saw once something with an expression but the expression Elements.Area does not seem to do the job?

    Is there really no possibility?

We are talking about the Reports dialog now, correct?

For documentation, open Reports dialog and press F1.

You can define a report which includes properties of multiple objects (including Items and Elements). This is easier to describe with screenshots.

    1. Define your Report to include your Item Type, plus the Shape element to which it is attached:

    2. Select columns from both your Item Type and the Shape element

    HTH,

    Paul

    If your not in Connect

Item Types exist in CONNECT Edition only, so it's answered automatically the discussion is about CONNECT Edition. Why to answer at any cost?

  • Tags and Item Types

Tags have been upgraded to items...

Tags have not been upgraded to anything in CONNECT.  They remain as they are in MicroStation V8i.  You can carry on working with tags in CONNECT just as you do in V8i.

Item Types are new for MicroStation CONNECT.  For new tasks, Item Types are preferred over tags.  Why?  For numerous reasons, including:

    1. Item Types  definitions are stored in DGNLibs
      1. You can use them anywhere in a workspace that includes that DGNLib
    2. Item Types  provide the data used when creating a graphic table, which is an element type new to CONNECT
    3. Item Types  provide the data used when creating a report (e.g. CSV file) for external consumption
    4. Item Types  are paid-up members of MicroStation EC Schema Data and contribute to the business information exported to an i-Model

    Tags are not Text Fields

In V8i you could use a  tag and the text could also be a text field ...

It's not clear what you intended to tell us, but what comes over is muddled.  Tags and text fields are two different, unrelated, technologies in MicroStation V8i.

... the area text label was dynamic

Text fields are dynamic.  Unfortunately there's no reporting mechanism for text fields.  You can't, for example, obtain an area report when using text fields.

    AreaAnnotator™

The tag could be harvested to tag report  and report on the area as an element atttribute

While tags have a reporting mechanism (in all versions of MicroStation), there's no built-in way by which an area tag can update itself automatically.  That's one reason we invented AreaAnnotator.

AreaAnnotator is freeware  for MicroStation V8i.  It provides dynamic update to linear, area and volumetric tags that annotate appropriate DGN elements. You can use MicroStation's built-in tag reporting mechanism to create, for example, an area report.

It was not answer at any  cost  it was  trying to  help a fellow user

....how can I get the  end result... the result is more important  when your boss is breathing down your neck...

So if  he could not do it  with connect and  cannot wait for an answer  ie  the  project  has to be  out tonight .. then I gave an out line of how to do it in V8i as an alternative and also  how he might  find an equivalent  process in Connect ie Reports...fortunately  it turned out that  connect help was timely and  Luc wasnt  desperate yet......
