Hello,
I am working with Microstation V8i SS2.
I need an area within a closed polyline. What is the best way to get an area in Microstation?
There is a good deal of information regarding the Measure Area tool in Help > Contents. If you have not had an opportunity to take a look at that, it is recommended as a starting point.

There is always more than one way to do anything in microstation....
If its a true closed polygon, select it and Right Mouse Button> properties and in the geometry you'll find the area, you can even copy paste this as text... this will also tell you via the properties if it is not a closed area polygon , if its only a string then ( no area given) you'll need to use the measure tool (area flood method) instead
But its always good to know the properties while you've got it already selected....
However
If you want it as a permanent Text label associated to the shape so if the shape changes then the label value updates, then I would use a Text Field
open text editor type AREA = < in here use insert field>
It will ask you to select element to associate , click on the polygon outline then browse to the area attribute and set accuracy , units etc.
Now it auto populates the value area attribute and is associated to that polygons attributes.
You can also download and use the MDL from the utilities section in the forum called Atool.
It will create and place a text value of the measured area inside a selected polygon it also can add or subtracted areas and place the answers as text onto your drawing very helpful and fast...
