Bentley View Users: Input Requested

For the upcoming Bentley View CONNECT, we would like to be able to support V8i workspaces in addition to the new CONNECT workspaces.  We would appreciate any comments to the questions below.

1)      What type of activities do you use Bentley View for?

2)      Why do you use Bentley View compared to using the engineering application (IE: MicroStation) to view a drawing?

3)      Who installs Bentley view?

4)      Do you use Bentley View with existing workspaces

5)      If implementing MicroStation CONNECT, is it likely you will work in a hybrid mode? Meaning some projects on V8i and some on CONNECT.

6)      If using Bentley View to access existing projects by workspace, how do your users use Bentley View?

  1. They understand the file structure and workspace concepts and can access the files directly
  2. They are very casual users that do not understand the workspace setup.  We install desktop icons that open the workspaces directly
  3. Other?

7)      Any other comments on how you use Bentley View in your organization appreciated.

  • Hi,
I am a Mstn user. I use my desktop computer as my main computer. On occasion, I also turn on my laptop computer and use that as well (at the same time as my desktop). So, I use Bentley View mainly for two things...

    1) If I have Microstation open on my desktop, opening it again to view something on my laptop could potentially exceed our number of licensed Mstn seats. So I will use Bentley View to view either my working DGN files or to view DWGs that were sent to me from a client.

    2) On my desktop, I have Mstn set to open two application windows. Sometimes I'm looking for a drawing (like a detail) and I just need to see what's in the drawing before I copy it. I have Bentley View set to open one application window, so it's easy for me to drag-and-drop files onto Bentley View to quickly and easily see what they are.

With Bentley View, I will be looking at DWGs (unknown versions, from out of our office), Mstn v7 dgns, Mstn v8-v8i dgns, and eventually (maybe) locally stored Mstn v10 dgns. We have no hopes or plans to store files "in the cloud".

As far as workspaces are concerned, we use a single workspace & project configuration for all our files.

    --Thanks,
    --Robert

Robert did you know you can preview mstn files in Windows explorer? ( if Mst V8i is installed on same machine) and can use the zoom and pan mouse  without opening the  file and without using  any extra licenses  not as good a Bentley view but a great extra benefit  when you only  have pc and  one  license... saves using your laptop just to view ....and  if you sort of know what your looking for by sight  great time saver... sorry for tiny bit off topic...
