CE - Slow to open files

does the file open any faster if no workspace/workset is used ?

I have the same setup in two clients.... i.e same approach to workspaces and Worksets. Only difference is the mapped drives and project folder structures

Client A (seconds) Client B (Seconds)
Open CE to file menu 13 89
Open DGN with Workset 6 98
Open same DGN without workset 5 83
File Close 4 85

The same files in both offices using V8i is 2 seconds on all tests

As you can see the time differences are huge. It doesn't make any significant difference if I am using a workset or not.

I checked the network speed and it is <1ms

If I do the same test using default CE its <10

Question - WHY?

What exactly does it mean and how do you test the network speed?

I ran the ping command to the server i.e. PING Server1 -t the result was a ping back in less than 1 millisecond

CE - Update 1 (update on speed)

Just updated to CE Update 1.

There is still a slow response to starting CE. Once loaded the file open is faster.

Do others see the slow speed on startup.

Also the windows-startup of our workstaion is slower since we installed CE.

Something in the CE causes slower workstations. Maybe something to do with the internet connection?

So Bentley world, is this just 2 users or are there more that find CE 10x slower than V8i

I wouldn't say 10x slower in general, but I would agree that for certain files it can be. Sometimes, I can easily ping between files, depending on their content.

A few things that I have found re speed.
1. If MS_CELLLIST variable is set, file opening and switching is much slower. Connect must be loading all cells in the path or some similar action. (never mind the criminally slow cell open and selection dialogue!!)

2. Custom interfaces can cause slowdown. I have quite a large element template library, which is linked to custom tools in v8i. I had to massively strip this down when using with connect, otherwise interface lag becomes a big issue. If I remove it completely everything speeds up.

3. Files which originated as dwg but have/were converted to dgn in V8i cause massive file open slowdown(or even crash). Error to do with converting ACIS objects to Parasolids
