CONNECT - Parametric Cells Linked Files Lost

Can you describe how you attached the link to the parametric cell?
Are you talking about:
1. Place parametric cell
2. Attach link to placed cell
3. Place another instance of that cell in another model
?
Or:
1. Attach link to an element inside parametric model
2. Place an instance of that model as a parametric cell
?
Or something else?
(Alternatively if you want to provide a .dgn exhibiting the issue that might help identify the problem).

1) Create parametric cell with multiple variations.
2) Attach/Link a PDF to one of the solids in the parametric cell to provide useful design data for engineers to use when placing the parametric cell.
3) Place the parametric cell into a model as if the cell is going to be used...
4) File link is gone.

This works as expected with Graphic cells in V8i the links persist after placing the cell even after dropping status on the cell from a cell to a smart solid the link is part of the solid.

Parametric cells behave like shared cells in this regard - there is only one copy of the geometry no matter how many instances of the cell you place, therefore only one link (inside the cell definition).

If you place a shared or parametric cell you won't see the links as they remain attached to the original geometry inside the cell definition.
If you then drop the cell, copies of the links will be attached to the dropped geometry.

Interesting I didn't think to drop the cell but that does work. Only issue then is the design data which was in the linked data is important to deciding which variation to use. So in usage we have a cart before the horse situation. I guess in a clumsy workaround we can place the cell twice drop status on the extra and get access to the link then change the un-dropped cell variation.

Just wondering if Items might be useful in this scenario.

Not sure what you mean by that DavidG, I haven't seen an option to make a link an item type but I would be interested in such a thing if it exists.

Haven't played with link sets/Items/Variations enough to know all the possibilities. Seems like I did something a while back using items with variation. Then it all fell apart on the display and reporting side so I abandoned it. You might be able to associate a text string/path. Would be nice if link sets were incorporated as an item type. Maybe that will happen about Connect SS7 update 3.a1x or so.
