  • First rule of software upgrades... Don't install them on a production computer, especially when you are under a production deadline. If you don't have a test computer to work with then wait until you have some slack in your schedule.

To address your immediate problem go through Control Panel->Uninstall to remove MicroStation. After it's done remove any left over files under C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries). Then reinstall MicroStation V8i SS3.

After your drawings are out and you have some time in your schedule go through the same process to remove MicroStation V8i SS3, then install MicroStation V8i SS4 and test it out.

All that may be true but SS4 is a commercial release and therefore assumed to work out the box,

  • In theory that's true, but that's a bad assumption to make about the commercial release of any software, not just MicroStation. You should always test commercial releases of software before putting them into production.

If they can't produce a reliable "commercial release" then they should NOT be removing the previous version. I only have one computer to work on where does that leave me? Am I required to buy an additional computer just to see if the commercial release I paid for works?
  • Hi DavidG,

You can always test new releases in a not production environment using a virtual machine (VMware player or similar).

VM's require additional windows licenses and will enviably result in a bill for Overusage as VM are considered a separate machine.  Been there done that several times already.

  • As I said in my reply to Stuart, if you only have one computer to work with wait until you have a little break in your schedule to install the update. Don't do it when you're working on a job with a short deadline. Also have a roll back plan in case something goes wrong. Leave yourself a way to get back to the configuration you had before.

It is impossible for Bentley or any other software company to test their commercial release on every possible combination of hardware, associated driver versions, and other installed software. I've been doing MicroStation and general IT support for over 25 years. You would be surprised at how some small, seemingly innocuous, software application or out of date driver can bring MicroStation, AutoCAD, or Microsoft Office to it's knees. Always test any new software in your environment first before trying to put it in to production.
